Liz Spicer

Mick’s walk over Dementia will take place over 14 days commencing on Friday 9 June, where he will be stopping at townships along the way to reach as many people possible to speak about his own personal Dementia Journey, the Dementia Support Group and Alliance, the importance of reducing the stigma and why he is walking to raise awareness and vital funds to find a cure for Dementia, which is the second leading cause of death in Australia and leading cause of Death in Women.

Kyabram P-12 Chaplain, Liz Spicer was asked by Mick, the citizen of the year, to open his walk with a blessing. Liz spoke of him being sure footed and strong during the walk and Blessed him. "It was an honour to be asked," Liz said.

Mick Simpson's advocacy for dementia started with his own diagnosis in 2018.  Mick has started a dementia support group and dementia alliance in the Goulburn Valley to support the growing number of people being diagnosed with dementia that are trying to navigate community with this 'new normal'.

In 2022, Mick was honoured to receive both Senior of the Year honours and Campaspe citizen of the year honours to mark the work he has been undertaking to support people within our community living with this disease, live productive, connected and positive lives.

Mick's goal is to raise $20,000 to continue to drive research into dementia and Childhood dementia and enable more programs and supports to be available within the Goulburn Valley for people living with dementia and their carers.
