Teaching and Learning

Welcome back to Term 2. We look forward to a wonderful term of learning.

National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy  (NAPLAN)

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2021, for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students will be held on Tuesday 11 May, Wednesday 12 May and Thursday 13 May 2021.

In 2021, Rangeview Primary School students in Years 3 and 5 will complete tests in a paper format. We have been advised that from 2022, Rangeview Primary School will take part in NAPLAN online.

The dates for the assessments are:

Tuesday 11th May 2021 – Language Conventions and Writing

Wednesday 12th May 2021 – Reading

Thursday 13th May 2021 – Numeracy

NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in writing, reading, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The results of the tests provide information for students, parents, teachers and principals which can be used to improve student achievement.

All students in years 3 and 5 are expected to participate in the NAPLAN tests. During test week, catch-up tests will be available for individual students who are absent on test days. These students may undertake catch-up tests on the days in the test week after the scheduled test, up to and including Friday 14 May 2021.

Support can be arranged for students with disabilities, if the student regularly uses similar support for classroom assessment tasks.

Large print, braille, electronic and black and white versions of the tests are available for students that require them.

Exemptions may be granted to students with significant intellectual disabilities and to students who have been learning English for less than one year.

Later in the year you will receive your child’s personal NAPLAN report. The report will describe your child’s particular skills in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The report will also show how your child performed in relation to national minimum standards. These describe the minimum acceptable standards for students across Australia.

For more information about the tests, please visit the VCAA website at www.vcaa.vic.edu.au

or the NAP website at www.nap.edu.au

Australian Early Development Census (AEDC)

Playing our part to build a national picture of child health

In May 2021, our school, along with thousands of others across the country will begin preparations for the fifth Australian Early Development Census (AEDC). This is for Foundation students only.

The AEDC gives us a national picture of the development, health and wellbeing of children in their first year of full-time school. Since 2009, the census results have helped communities, schools and governments plan services and develop better policies to target support for children and families.

Children don’t miss any class time, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information for the census. The AEDC gives us data at a school and community level - it isn’t an assessment of individual children.

Information will be sent home to the families of all Foundation children.

To find out more about the census and how communities are using the data to help children and families visit the AEDC website: www.aedc.gov.au

Student Mobile Phones

In accordance with the Department of Education Mobile Phones – Student Use Policy issued by the Minister for Education, personal student mobile phones must not be used while on-site at Rangeview Primary School during school hours, including lunchtime and recess.

Students are encouraged not to bring mobile phones and smart watches to school unless absolutely necessary.

Where students bring a mobile phone to school or any other device with internet connectivity, Rangeview Primary School will provide secure storage and students are required to store their phones and devices by handing them into the school administration office to be placed in a lockable cupboard before school. The devices can then be collected from the office after the 3.30pm school bell.
