Merri station

Successful biodiversity grant application

Northcote High School and the Merri Stationeers Group were successful in applying for a grant of $7500 from Darebin Council as part of the Caring for Our Local Environments (COLE) initiative. COLE supports local community groups to deliver projects which encourage people to take action for the environment.

Students from the school will participate in the planting of indigenous plants in the areas licensed to the Merri Stationeers group around Merri Station in Northcote. This will introduce the students to local environmental work in Darebin and create an awareness among the students of the work undertaken by environmental volunteer groups.

The planting & works undertaken will increase the diversity of plants and habitats in the current Woodland Garden plus new areas surrounding the station.

No-waste-mas challenge

Did you know that this holiday season Aussies will use 150,391 km of wrapping paper- enough to go around the world 4 times?! And that we are given $600,000,000 worth of gifts we don’t want every year? How much stress and worry does this cause?!

Waste and environmental destruction don’t need to be a part of the holidays. We can focus on what really matters to us, and reduce our impact on the environment at the same time.

Transform Waste is pleased to announce the No-Waste-Mas challenge, making the holidays more about what matters, and less about waste. It’s a commitment to make some simple changes in how you celebrate. You decide what the changes are – there’s no right way to do it!

Head to No-Waste-Mas now to find ideas of how to get started. Sign the pledge and get a full list of tips, weekly updates and stories about people like you taking the challenge.
