Gate2Plate Challenge

The Harvey Beef Gate2Plate Challenge occurs every year from January to April where teams of two steers and one heifer are entered by farmers all over the Great Southern region. The teams can be of any breed and up until this year we bought cattle from other supportive farmers. Next year we will, for the first time, enter our own cattle from the Angus herd. The competition looks at breeding for production and meeting consumer requirements.

Last week on Wednesday 24 March, Year Ten agriculture students attended the School Challenge and pitted their wits on the beef industry against Mount Barker Community College and four of the Agricultural Colleges. They listened to presentations and then had to answer questions about the presentation. Whilst all the other students were from Years Eleven and Twelve, the eight from GSG competed very well getting plenty of ribbons in the process. Well done to Brendan Quick, Henry Stephens and Leo Fleming all coming third in their particular presentation.

We had fantastic feedback from the Harvey Beef Gate2Plate Challenge Committee:

"All students on the day were outstanding with their conduct, level of questioning of presenters on the day and interaction with industry representatives. This is the committee's highlight of the Challenge each year.  We wish all students well in their endeavour to be a part of the Agricultural Industry. The Hospitality students were outstanding and must be recognized for their outstanding customer service with smiles on their faces!"

Down on the GSG Farm - Bees

Last year the Agriculture programme was lucky enough to partner with Mrs Shelley Bowden from SKK Honey and purchase one hive and one nucleus hive. Some of the Year Nine Agriculture students in 2020 made it their project to establish bees at GSG and now the 2021 Year Eight students have taken it on. We have increased our capacity with two hives including a “super” (where the honey is made) on each. This has been helped along enormously by the rich flowers that established in all the trees along the regenerated creek line.

This week we extracted honey for the first time using a three frame extractor, kindly lent to us by parent Mr Jono Wesley. We took out six frames this week and managed to extract about 8kg of delicious honey that the Year Eight Agriculture students eagerly took home to “put on their Weet-Bix".

Da Vinci Decathlon

The Da Vinci Decathlon is an annual event held each year in Perth. The academic gala sees some of the brightest students from across the state go head to head across ten disciplines: English, Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Art & Poetry, Creative Producers, Ideation, Code Breaking, Cartography and Legacy. The competition, held at Winthrop Hall on the beautiful UWA campus, is intense, but the experience incredibly rewarding.

With 25 schools in their division, our Year Nine team did the school incredibly proud. They have been training since Term 4 last year and came away with the following top three positions:

3rd place: English

3rd place: Legacy

1st place: Art and Poetry

More detailed results are to be released later, but I am certain they have done an excellent job and that all their studying and dedication has paid off.

Children’s University

Children’s University is an initiative started by the University of Western Australia. Great Southern Grammar has been lucky enough to work with them on this inaugural project with students from Years Three to Six joining their passport for learning. This ‘passport’ encourages students to participate in learning experiences in both our local community and around this state. On Thursday, students were presented with their passports and can now begin their learning experiences during the holidays. As it is their inaugural year, only 40 places were available, and they certainly filled quickly. We hope that our work with the program will continue and there will be further possibilities for more participants in future years.
