Drama

YEAR 9

Year 9 Drama have commenced the year with a focus on the core Elements of Drama. Students have been work shopping scripted scenes, devising original work and improvising to explore elements such as character, setting, mood and focus. Over the course of the term, students have been reflecting on their experiential learning in a written logbook. Next term, they will focus on Elements of Production with an emphasis on creating their own directorial vision and costume designs for an Australian play.

YEAR 10

Year 10 Drama have studied the dramatic tradition of Commedia Dell'arte this term. Performers explored the stock characters of this Italian drama, their status, characteristic, Lazzi and movements. They also experimented using masks to convey character. Commedia, as the name implies is a commercial performance style and performers have enjoyed making nonsensical noises and using commercial movements to create character.

SYDNEY DRAMA TRIP

Year 10 and 12 Drama recently traveled to Sydney to watch performances and complete a performance workshop with the Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP).

Here is what Grace Pitchford and Ella Crawford (Year 12 Drama) had to say:

Year 10 and Year 12 Drama classes recently attended our excursion to Sydney where we were lucky enough to watch the productions of Frozen the Musical, Playing Beatie Bow and take part in a four hour theatrical workshop conducted by the ATYP.

COVID did not stop us from enjoying ourselves as we stayed safe by wearing face masks and continually sanitising. This was a great experience as we were able to further our knowledge on our HSC topic of Approaches to Acting influenced by Jacques Lecoq and his theatre practices in regards to the movement of the body.

We were able to use our existing knowledge to perform wearing a neutral mask and greatly increase our skills in regards to using physical movements as our faces were masked. We thoroughly enjoyed both of the productions and in particular Frozen as the music, props, costumes, dancing, singing and acting was impeccable.

We are thankful for these opportunities and will be able to reflect on the experiences within both the written and physical components of the HSC. Thank you to Mrs Lewis, Ms Fonte and Mr Murphy for taking us on the trip and putting in so much effort and care to make it amazing.

JUNIOR DRAMA ENSEMBLE

After school Drama has continued to grow with new members joining us for 2021. Throughout Term 1, our focus has been on developing confidence and a sense of ensemble through students participating in drama games, skill development activities, interpreting scripts and improvisation. New members are most welcome to join in Term 2.
