NAPLAN ONLINE

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment of literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

Mater Dei College will be participating in NAPLAN Online between 11 and 21 May 2021

In preparation for NAPLAN Online, our College has been be participating in practice tests over the last few weeks. These practice tests were a trial-run and a preparation activity for NAPLAN Online in May. It is not an assessment of student ability and the tests will not be marked.

Excessive preparation for NAPLAN Online is not recommended. Students can use the public demonstration site  to familiarise themselves with the types of questions and tools available in the NAPLAN Online tests.

TRAFFIC REMINDER - AFTERNOON DEPARTURE PLUNKETT DRIVE

Please be advised of the following:

Police have been made aware of a dangerous practice being perpetuated by motorists travelling upon Plunkett Drive adjacent to the Mater Dei school at drop-off and collection times.

Some drivers are stopping their vehicles within the traffic lane and waving buses out of the bus bays onto Plunkett Drive encouraging the bus drivers to take precedence into the traffic flow.

Whilst some people see this as a courtesy, in effect the practice is very dangerous. If the bus driver takes advantage of the gesture, pulls out into the traffic flow and is hit by a motorist coming the other way, the potential for injury is very real. Furthermore, if someone collides with the rear of a car that suddenly stops to let a bus in, that creates a problem as well. Stopping in this manner also constitutes the offence of ‘causing an obstruction to a traffic flow’ which can incur a monetary penalty.

There have been several near misses reported to police and local bus companies have been made aware of their obligations in relation to giving way to other traffic, regardless of whether they have been ‘waved through’ or not.

Over the next few months, Highway Patrol Police will be directing attention to the area at drop-off and collection times with a view to curbing this behaviour and reducing the likelihood of an accident. Appropriate action may result if the dangerous practice continues.

To ensure the safety of all road users, it is inherent that  motorist are aware of relevant traffic legislation and don’t take it upon themselves to interpret it in their own way.
