Open Night

Open Night
Thank you to all who attended our Open Night on Tuesday night.
The large crowd was full of compliments and many people spoke about their positive experience of our College, especially the great learning on display and the warmth of staff and students.
Year 7 student, Pacifique Munezero spoke on the night about “Why Mater Dei is such a fantastic school”. Below is his speech:
Why I love Mater Dei
Good evening parents, students and teachers,
My name is Pacifique Munezero, and I just started Year 7 at Mater Dei Catholic College and between you and me I am loving it because there are heaps of good opportunities; and I have made friends that I will never forget. The students and teachers are really nice here.
You will be surprised at all the different subjects that you can choose from - there’s something for everyone. Throughout the years you will get to go on amazing camps and excursions to other states or countries. Sport is also one of the best parts of high school, but if you’re not into sport there are Music and Art programs that are really good.
I know there may be some people that are scared about coming to high school because none of your friends are going to the same high school as you. Or, you might live out of Wagga and you don’t know anyone here. But don’t worry.
I understand because when I started high school I didn't have any friends come with me and I was getting concerned that I might be alone for the rest of my high school years and would I need to change who I am, just to find friends; but I didn't have to worry because the other students at Mater Dei will welcome you to the group and they will let you join in their games. It is just so wonderful and every day you will be so happy to go to school, like I am.
Another thing you might be thinking about is homework and assignments but I can tell you that it’s not hard. It’s actually really fun. One of the things I like best is TED, short for Connected Learning because we are able to move around and work with students in different class rooms in the Glasshouse. Our rooms open up into one big space for these lessons. I can ask other teachers in the rooms too because they could have the answer I am looking for. At the end of each lesson the teachers ask the students what went well and we can share what we think was good.
In other subjects like Maths we watch videos and tutorials that show us how to answer the questions, which is really helpful and if you like using technology then you’re going to love high school because you use your laptop a lot. If you not good with technology don’t worry, you will learn.
If you’re like me and you’re the person that likes to watch videos and play video games for fun you are going to love the resource centre, which is what we call the library; but this library is different because unlike you’re old library you don’t have to wait to go on the computers because you have your own laptop. When you need a break at recess and lunch and feel hungry you can go to the canteen and guess what, our canteen has great food. We sometimes even have hot chips and burgers!
There’s a lot more that I could tell you about my first weeks at Mater Dei but the main things I want to share is that learning is fun here, you get lots of help from the teachers and I have already made some great new friends at Mater Dei.
Thank you.
