Advent 2019

Last Sunday marked the beginning of Advent.  Advent is the period of four Sundays and weeks leading up to Christmas.  Advent means ‘coming’ in Latin. During Advent we are waiting for the coming of Jesus.

“Advent is the time to welcome Jesus’ coming, as He comes as a messenger of peace to show us the ways of God.” - Pope Francis, 2019

Advent is a time to prepare ourselves for the coming of Jesus in all we say and do

Advent is a time to reach out to others in the spirit of love and share what we have been given

Advent is a time to remember all that God has done for us and give praise to God’s name

One of the Symbols of Advent is the wreath.

The circle of the Advent Wreath, without a beginning or an end, symbolises God’s unending love for us.

The evergreen in the wreath represents growth and the hope of eternal life.

Purple, the colour of our prayer cloth and candles, is the Church’s colour for preparation and sacrifice.

The lighting of candles each week in Advent marks our growing anticipation of the coming of Christ, Light of the World.

We pray….

Loving God, we wait for the coming of your Son, Jesus,

into our hearts and our lives this Advent.

Jesus is the light of the world, the light in the wilderness.

Help us to always be a guiding light in our world today.

The prophet Isaiah called Jesus the “Prince of Peace”.

Help us to wait with peace and happiness during this Advent season.

We ask that we give ourselves the time and space

to prepare for Christmas with a peaceful heart.

Amen
