Middle Unit -2/3

Hello wonderful families,

Wow, it’s already week 3! It was fantastic to see so many families through the 'meet and greets' last week. We hope that you are feeling more connected to your child’s learning and feel comfortable asking any questions you may have! We also hope you are getting back into the routine of school life. We’ve certainly been working hard on developing routines, expectations and engaging opportunities for our students to learn.

Our focus for writing these past few weeks has been on personal narratives, where students were encouraged to write about their favourite holiday! We’ve been intrigued by their view of life and impressed with the way they have approached writing in paragraphs and with purpose. In the next few weeks we will shift from personal narratives to persuasive pieces. Both these genres of writing give the students' agency and a space to express themselves. It helps to get them engaged with writing and develop a stronger sense of their ‘voice’.

During reading we have been focusing on what it means to be an engaged reader and what our classroom reading community looks like, sounds like and feels like. We got the opportunity to borrow from the library for the first time this week - which the students were very excited about. Please continue to read with your child (most nights if possible!) and make notes in their reading diaries. These are collected each Friday to check their progress and celebrate their successes.

Our maths focus has been on developing a really strong sense of number through skip counting and place value. These building block concepts are essential for each student to thrive in the numeracy classroom. Students have been having fun challenging themselves to skip count from random numbers and will be setting personal goals this week.

Lastly, we’ve been focusing on having a growth mindset in and out of the classroom. This means we see mistakes as opportunities to learn and always try our best.

Kind regards,
