Introducing the Writer’s Notebook

In order to inspire our students and get them to view themselves as writers, all children from Foundation to Year 6 will be provided with their own Writer’s Notebook this year.

A Writer’s Notebook is the place where students will keep all their ideas and inspiration for writing topics. It is where they will collect all their thoughts and let their imaginations run wild. It is a magical place that students can fill with a collection of artefacts that provoke writing (seeds) such as, photos, drawings, holiday mementos, lists, magazine clippings, collector cards, postcards, etc.

Students will be encouraged to spend a few minutes writing in their Writer’s Notebook everyday (this may vary depending on the year level). All classroom teachers will also be keeping their own Writer’s Notebook to model its use in the classroom.

Parents/Carers, we are asking for your help! In order to get your child/children excited about their writing, please help them collect different artefacts now that they can bring to school and use to decorate their Writer’s Notebook. This will not only help your child to personalise their notebook and make it their own, but it will also get them excited about writing by providing them with lots of ideas that are important and meaningful to them. Students will be encouraged to keep collecting artefacts all throughout the year and bring them to school to place in their notebook. So, next time you visit the zoo or go to the movies, hang onto those ticket stubs, send in photos that capture the memories you are making as a family and encourage your child to be constantly on the lookout for writing seeds.

Many Thanks,
