Grade 5/6 News

Term 1, Week 2

Welcome!

What an awesome start we have had to 2023 in the Grade 5/6 Department. It seems that most students have settled in well to their new classroom environments. We have been spending a lot of time getting to know each other and setting up the expectations for the year. We are looking forward to a fun year of learning in 2023.

Homework

Due to camp, our homework routine will begin next week. We will send home Talk Homework and Reading Logs on Monday. The expectation is that students complete 2 hours of reading each week and that other homework is signed by a parent/guardian.

Learning in Weeks 3 & 4

In reading, we will be looking at the Comprehension strategy of Making Connections. When we read, we can make connections to other texts, to ourselves and to the world around us. This strategy can help to improve our understanding and the way we relate to what we read.

We will be focusing on persuasive texts during our writing sessions; looking at how we structure a formal persuasive piece of writing and developing a bank of sophisticated connectives and persuasive vocabulary we can use. Next Thursday we will be having our first Big write for the year. The talk homework will be sent home on Monday.

In Mathematics, we will begin with some number skills to build a good base to develop our abilities this year.

Grade 5/6 Camp

Everyone has been having a great time so far. Some of the highlights are the Tube Slide, the Rock Climbing and such a beautiful camp site. We have attached a few photos and I'm sure there will be many more to come.
