6.8 Advent to Christmas: A Time for Longing and Fulfilment:

This unit explores the liturgical season of Advent as a time of waiting, longing and preparation. Through the Jesse Tree the story of the people of faith in Scripture, who prepared and longed for the coming of the Saviour, is told. The unit focuses on Christmas as the fulfilment of God’s promise of salvation and explores some ways the Catholic community celebrates Christmas. Students are invited to reflect on the birth of Jesus,

when God became human and lived among us.

English

Students will study a range of texts in their new English Unit, Antarctica - The Frozen Planet. The unit focuses on building students’ skills, understandings, values and attitudes in English while exploring Antarctica’s uniqueness and critical importance for the global environment.

This unit focuses on argument and authority and symbol, image and connotation. Students practise note-taking, synthesising and communicating information. They analyse text features that characterise an authoritative style and apply these when reading and viewing texts and in the composition of a variety of texts. Students explore the impact of writers and composers utilising symbol, image and connotation in texts and apply literary devices for clear purposes in their own writing and composing of a range of informative, imaginative and persuasive texts about aspects of sustainability.

Students will engage in modelled, shared and independent activities relating to reading and viewing, writing and representing, responding and composing and speaking and listening. Students will also be taught explicit skills in relation to grammar, punctuation and vocabulary.

Mathematics

Flexible learning groups will continue this term for Mathematics. The topics being covered are:

  • Fractions and Decimals
  • Time
  • Three-Dimensional Space
  • Volume and Capacity
  • Whole Number

It is expected that all children in Year 6 are practising their timetables regularly. If students are confident in their times tables, they could learn them backwards as division instead, or add a zero to their times tables, e.g. instead of 12 x 2 = 24, learn 120 x 2 = 240.

Science and Technology

Students will continue to learn about how energy is transformed from one form to another. Students will have the chance to investigate how electrical energy can control movement in products and systems. This unit of work will develop students’ abilities to design, test and evaluate a product or system that demonstrates energy transformation, further developing an understanding of the interrelationship between force and energy.

History

In History this term students will continue studying the unit ‘Australia as a Nation’. This unit follows on from term three to allow students to develop a deeper understanding of change and continuity in Australia and the causes and effects of changes on society. They will also have the opportunity to explore the understanding of the struggles for rights and freedoms in Australia, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Students will be given the opportunity to explore this topic through guided inquiry by identifying an area of interest, gathering information from selected sources and creating a product to share their findings. This method of teaching will allow students to take responsibility for their own learning and give them the chance to share what they have learnt.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education

In Personal Development this Term, students will describe the factors that influence personal identity and examine the physical, social and emotional changes that occur during puberty. Students will also explore concepts of self-esteem, feelings and dealing with emotions. If at any time you would like to discuss the content of this Curriculum area please speak with your child’s class teacher. A note outlining some of the syllabus content will be sent out prior to lessons commencing.

Students will also continue with the program Open Parachute. The program aims to reduce stigma and generate authentic dialogue in classrooms about the real issues students face. The psychological skills-building exercises aim to increase empathy, self-compassion, self-awareness, mental health literacy, and self-efficacy in students.

In Peer Support, students will delve into a module called "Promoting Harmony." Aligned with our school's core values, this module will empower students to actively and critically construct shared values linked with our Mercy Values.

In Physical Education this Term, students will be provided with opportunities to develop their skills and build confidence in gymnastic activities using Fundamental Movement Skills. Students will practise and apply these skills through rotations activities and games.

This term, Year 6 students will participate in a Surf Awareness program at South Cronulla Beach.  The date for this is: Monday 14th November

    • Arrive on time for each lesson
    • Bring their instrument and required accessories to every lesson
    • Bring their Essential Elements* music book
    • Bring a lead pencil and eraser

Creative Arts

In Music this Term, students will begin to understand music as an important medium of expression that can be shared both in groups and individually. They will develop an understanding of the roles of performer and composer and how these roles can be both separated and combined. Students will recognise that their work in class as both performers and composers can also be combined.

In Drama, students will engage in small group work to create a video drama news report. Students will develop their ability to use mime, movement, vocal expression and projection to create characters and engaging performances

Students will continue to engage in Art lessons with their classroom teacher.

This Term's Visual Arts unit aims to develop the student’s knowledge and understanding, skills, values and attitudes of making and appreciating various art forms. The students will be exploring this through the forms of drawing and photography while examining the subject matter of people and events.

Mandarin

Our students continue to enjoy participating in the Chinese language program called the Meg Language Program. The Meg Curriculum is written by the co-author of the Australian Curriculum. All students and teachers will participate in the digital learning platform via Zoom weekly sessions with educators in China.

Homework

Students will be provided with a paper copy of their Homework Grid each week. Homework will also be uploaded onto Google Classroom for students to have remote access to their tasks if needed.

The homework grid clearly outlines the tasks that students are expected to complete each week. The students have been made aware of the expectations around the presentation and delivery of their homework. Homework is due each Monday. If your child is unable to complete their homework, please communicate this to their classroom teacher.

It is an expectation that your child is bringing their diary with them to school every day. The diary is a means of communication between home and school, a record of their nightly reading and a useful tool to remind them of important dates.

We look forward to continuing to work with you and your child this term. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher via a note or by appointment at the office.
