Religious Education

3.5 Called to be Saints:

In this unit, students will explore the Christian call to be saints which we all receive at our Baptism. Students will identify, in their experience, people who demonstrate holiness in love and service to others. They will also learn about the canonised saints – those whom the Church has declared saints and set before us as models of holiness. The process of canonisation will be explored.

3.8 Advent to Christmas: A Time for responding in Love

The unit develops the concept of Jesus as a gift and fulfilment of God’s promise. The students will be able to recall events in the Scriptures and explain how Mary is a model for us. They will also recognise the liturgical season of Advent and Christmas as times to celebrate their relationship with God.

English

During this unit, students will engage in shared, modelled and independent tasks relating to Reading, Viewing, Writing and Representing with a focus on Fiction texts in particular Twisted Fairy Tales. Students will investigate the ways that an author uses text structures, textual concepts and language to create entertaining and humorous narratives. Students work towards creating their own twisted fairy tale narratives. The Literature this term is based on the following texts; The Wolf's Story, Trust Me; Jack’s Beanstalk Stinks and The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales. In reading, we will focus on comprehension strategies with an explicit reciprocal reading program. Students will follow the Year 3 Soundwaves spelling program.

Mathematics

Flexible learning groups will continue this term. The activities are differentiated and the children are grouped in order to cater to their needs and abilities. During these groups, the students are explicitly taught concepts from the NSW Mathematics K-10 Syllabus. The topics taught in Term 4 are; Position, Time, Chance, Fractions and Decimals, Length and Area.  The students will continue to engage in a numeracy fluency program to develop counting patterns, as well as facts and strategies for mathematical operations.

History

This term we will continue our unit on ‘Community and Remembrance.’ This topic provides a study of identity and diversity in both a local and broader context. Moving from the heritage of their local area, students explore the historical features and diversity of their community. They examine local, state and national symbols and emblems of significance, and celebrations and commemorations, both locally and in other places around the world.

Science and Technology

In Science and Technology, Year 3 will continue to explore the Material World. Students will focus on how solids and liquids change state and the properties of natural and processed materials. They will be given the opportunity to investigate how different properties of materials affect their sustainability for products. Students will develop a solution to an identified need or opportunity, using a variety of materials.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education

This Term students will continue the Open Parachute program. Open Parachute aims to provide practical support on mental health to students.  Students will also participate in Peer Support sessions, led by our Year 6 students. In Peer Support, students will delve into a module called "Promoting Harmony." Aligned with our school's core values, this module will empower students to actively and critically construct shared values linked with our Mercy Values.

Our Swimming program is run by Neilson’s Swim School at Caringbah Leisure Centre. They provide qualified, experienced instructors who teach water safety and race readiness. The swimming program is part of the school curriculum and is compulsory for all children. The intensive swimming program will run for 5 days. Each lesson is 40 minutes.
