OPTUS Digital Thumbprint workshop for Year 8 Students:

All Year 8 students participated in the Digital Thumbprint workshop with either Victoria or Dom from OPTUS. The Cyberbullying workshop covered how to be respectful online, responsibilities of the individual, how to keep safe and what to do if something goes wrong, and Image Based Abuse.

Students were given examples of how situations can get out of hand when disrespectful things are said online, when threats are made, and inappropriate images are shared. Dom and Victoria presented students with a real situation that took place a few years ago at another secondary college and students were able to choose actions they would take - do nothing, send a private message, post a public reply, or do something else.

Students were given insight into a situation that got out of hand and the individuals involved in the cyberbullying ended up being expelled and the police got involved.

Dom and Victoria will run more workshops throughout the year across Years 9 – 12. Epping Secondary College is working towards becoming an e-Smart school. We will continue to educate students on how to be respectful online, their responsibilities, how to keep safe and what to do if something goes wrong.
