Heliography project

Fun with the sun

BOTH Year 10 Textiles classes had the chance to experiment with heliography – the art of using the sun to create an image on fabric.

Sun painting utilises either the radiant infrared or the ultra-violet rays of the sun to create images on fabric. Not your usual form of fabric painting, the technique works by using very thin paints which are highly saturated with colour first, and then creating images by placing solids objects over the wet paint.

As the sun dries the paint, it fades the colours behind the solid objects, leaving behind a shadow image. Some students pre-prepared objects and shapes, whereas other used items from the garden to achieve their distinct look. The process itself is quite quick and easy, and took a single lesson. The resulting drawstring bags look amazing!
