Intermediate Girls Take Home GOLD, Bronze for Senior Boys

The EIS Basketball Program finished up 2019 with a fantastic week at the Nationals Basketball Tournament held this year in Victoria. We had four teams qualify and enter the tournament across multiple divisions and compete against teams from all over Australia.

Intermediate Boys

With fantastic numbers, we were fortunate enough to be able to enter two teams in Division 2 and Division 4.

The Division 2 Team were up against some tough competition right from the start. The first game, they came up short against Damascus College from Sydney. The boys unfortunately had tough games for the remainder of the week and couldn’t manage a pool win. In the classification game, the boys managed to get some redemption against Damascus and record their first win of the week. The team learnt a lot during the week and certainly improved each individually.

The Division 4 Boys were highly competitive in most matches throughout the week. Their first win came on Tuesday afternoon,  when going up against St. Augustine.  With the game in the balance, the boys were fantastic defensively and grinded out a 7 point victory. The following three pool games were challenging, coming up against sports academies from NSW and Western Australia.  The boys were valiant in defeat and showed glimpses of their improvement. Their final classification game for the tournament, resulted in their second win. They came up against Trinity Grammar from South Australia, where they put on their best performance for the tournament and took out a comfortable win, 56 v 42.

Intermediate Girls

After going through the five pool games throughout the week undefeated, the Intermediate Girls had a tough draw for the finals. The Semi Final saw us face an interstate Coffs Harbour team, in a fast paced affair.  After being down by 9 points midway through the second quarter, the girls rallied to take home a tough victory, in a high scoring game with the scoreboard reading, 68 v 57 at the final siren.

This led us to a preliminary final match up against Encounter Lutheran Sports College. The opposition made us work for every scoring opportunity, but the class of Tayja from the perimeter, Mariah in the key and the toughness of Lara and Paula on the boards, meant we grinded out a tough fought victory to advance to the Gold Medal Match.

We met an undefeated NSW team in, Hunter Sports Academy on Friday afternoon which delivered an incredible challenge. After controlling the pace of the game from the tip-off, the girls found themselves 8 points up at quarter time, but like any good team, Hunter rallied and by half time were up by 7 points. With some composure and control, the girls fought back hard in the second half, taking a commanding and unassailable 14 point lead late in the last. Final scores read, Lilydale High Girls Gold Medallists 47 v 39.

Senior Boys

The Senior Boys had a challenge from the start, competing with only 6 players. They started the week slow, just scraping over the line to a one point win, with 0.5 seconds left in the game. However, the boys quickly clicked into gear, winning the next 3 of their pool games to book a spot in the finals. Their final pool game, the boys went down to a tough St Augustine College.

The semi-finals saw the boys up against Cabra College from Adelaide. Unfortunately, the boys could not get it going in this game and went down by 10, relegating them to the Bronze medal match.

Once again, the boys met St Augustine from NSW, but this game would be different. In the final game for the school, for Riley Spicer, Connor Walker, Cayden Maki and Beau Tennant, the boys weren’t going to leave the tournament without a medal. Kyle Emary and Matt Pollock from Year 11 were on board and the team managed save their best game for last and completely outplayed St Augustine to win by 9.

The Bronze medal was a great send off for the Year 12’s and very well deserved for the team.   Congratulations and well done boys!
