College Happenings

Joey's Van

This Term, senior students have the opportunity to get involved with “Joey’s Van” which is an Outreach Ministry of St Joseph’s Parish Springvale. Students & staff from the College travel to the Dandenong Plaza Court yard every Friday night to give companionship and food to the poor and marginalised of our society.

It is a very eye-opening and powerful experience, one that makes you appreciate how fortunate we are here at the College. It is great to be given the opportunity to take the time to help those in our society who need it; it is something I would recommend doing.

House Debating

Congratulations to Solomon House, winners of the 2018 House Debating Shield, after beating Benilde House in a closely contested Grand Final, hosted by College Debating Captain, Jeremy Mann, and adjudicated by Debating Coordinator, Ms. Kaylene Menara.

In a tightly fought battle over the topic "That the costs of banning single use plastic bags outweigh the benefits", it was excellent to witness the articulate intellect and humour from both teams, with great depth of argument offered in each case. Solomon took the slight edge in this debate with the stronger team case overall, and collaborated well between speakers to escalate their progressive rebuttal.

It was a significant win, the first time that Solomon has put their name on the shield since its inception a decade ago.

Solomon Speakers: Elijah Barrett, Edward McGarry and Joel Bright.

Benilde Speakers: Max Vaughan, Darcy Tilbrook and Julian Taylor.

We look forward to the Junior Debating Challenge to be held later in Semester Two.
