The Family Tree by Mal Peet. The Nest was the best thing my Dad ever built for me.  He built it when we moved into the new house – him, me and Mum.  But then Dad went there to hide from everyone, including Mum, and everything started going wrong.  This story is haunting, engrossing and beautifully written.

 

Inside the Tiger by Hayley Lawrence.  Bel only meant to write to a prisoner – Micah Rawlinson, she never meant to fall for him!  Micah has a terrible past and no future prospects, well, non that are appealing.  Still, meeting people through letter writing in this day and age is unusual and helps fill in the lonely time in prison.

Flora’s War  by Pamela Rushby.  It’s 1915 and sixteen year old Australian, Flora Wentworth is visiting Cairo with her archaeologist father.  The war upsets her archaeological plans as assistant to her father when increasing numbers of wounded and dying soldiers of Gallipoli are shipped into Cairo. Flora soon finds herself moving away from archaeology and her ‘coming of age’ social life, and transporting injured soldiers, young as she is and assisting exhausted nurses. 

 

The Anger of Angels by Sherryl Jordan.  Giovanna is part of a world where it is a crime to speak against injustice.  However her father, a jester, dares to perform a play that enrages a powerful tyrant prince.  As a result, Giovanna must ‘pay’ for her father mis-speaking.  She holds a secret which once revealed could end the rule of the prince and liberate his oppressed citizens.  The timing is crucial, openly denouncing the prince brings certain death.  Will she have the courage to speak up?

 

The square root of Summer by Harriet Reuter Hapgood.  Gottie fell in love with Jason last summer, but he wouldn’t hold her hand at her grandfather’s funeral.  Then her childhood best friend, Thomas, moved away, leaving her with a scar on her hand and a gap in her memory.  This summer, things are about to change forever. Gottie’s past, present and future are about to collide and it’s a little bit like a black hole and infinity!
