World Refugee Week

World Refugee Week celebrations began at Evans High School on Monday the 20th of June. All students across the school participated in a lesson where they learnt about World Refugee Week, learning the difference between refugees, migrants and asylum seekers. Students also learnt about the experiences of refugees, the challenges they face and how they build resilience through their experiences.

On Wednesday, the 22nd of June, the school came together to celebrate World Refugee Week with a huge cultural showcase concert with singing, dancing and a fashion parade! Our cultural showcase concert began with speeches from students who have refugee experience. Hordii, a 12 year old student from Ukraine stood up in front of Evans High School and our special guests to recall his story having to leave Ukraine. His story moved the audience and brought tears to the eyes of many.

Lunchtime was buzzing with a variety of cultural foods for students to try. All the food was so popular that most of the stalls ran out before the end of lunch! As always, students and staff of Evans High School are extremely proud of their cultural heritage and backgrounds, this could be seen through the vast amount of students staff dressing up in their cultural dress, colouring the school with a sea of cultural colours, costumes and proud smiles on their faces.

Naidoc Week

Evans High School started Naidoc Week celebrations on Monday, 27th of June. All students across the school participated in a lesson about Naidoc Week. As a part of that lesson, students learnt about the Myall Creek Massacre and participated in writing a letter to a warrior or family member of Myall Creek to express their thoughts on what happened in 1838.

On Wednesday, we had our official Yarning Circle Opening Ceremony! Uncle Wes Marne conducted a smoking ceremony and shared stories and poetry from his book "Through Old Eyes." Our students who are a part of Solid Ground performed an Indigenous dance routine.

Science Lab Opening

On the last day of Term 2, our new science labs had its official grand opening with a formal ribbon cutting! The new spaces are looking really professional and they are ready to go for students and teachers at the start of Term 3! We cannot wait to see the amazing learning that is going to happen in these new labs, a beautiful space for our young scientists!
