The Uluru Statement from the Heart

What is the statement?

The Uluru Statement from the Heart is an invitation from First Nations to all Australians to come together and make a better future for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and all Australians. It’s about telling the truth about our past and making changes to give our First Nations a voice and encourage more peace to everyone.

There are 12 paragraphs in the Statement. It includes:

“When we have power over our destiny our children will flourish. They will walk in two worlds and their culture will be a gift to their country.”

The Statement asks for change for First Nations people in three key areas: 1. Their voice, 2. Treaty, and 3. Truth.

What does it mean?

The Statement asks for changes to the law of Australia to improve and make change to the representation of indigenous Australians.

When was it created?

The Statement was created on 26th May 2017. This was after representatives of the government spent two years in 2016 and 2017 talking to first nation communities across Australia about what the statement should say and how it should be developed.

Who signed the statement?

250 Aboriginal and Torres Strait leaders signed the statement.

What’s next?

On 21st May 2022, Australia’s new Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, committed to the Uluru Statement from the Heart in full.

A Big Thank You

A big thank you to the Watkins family for donating a selection of books to our school. We are very grateful we have more books about our Aboriginal culture in the OLA Library. It is very nice for you to do this. Everyone will enjoy and learn so much from reading and learning about our Indigenous culture, spirituality and rich Australian history.
