Fun ideas for the school holidays

Do you love or loathe the winter school holidays?  Do you enjoy spending time at home resting and rejuvenating, or do you struggle with the “I’m bored” or “I have nothing to do” comments which often leads to the bickering and arguing between siblings?

If you are scratching your head wondering what to do during these holidays, have a look at the list below which may give you some ideas for free fun you can have at home, during the day if you are lucky enough to have some time off working, when you get home from work, or on the weekends.

Get Mr.Maker-ing

Creativity and imagination flow when given the chance.  Collect some old boxes, paper, glue, textas…see what creations the kids can make.

At home Master Chef

Not only fun, but learning as well to read recipes and with measuring and counting.  Have the kids try out a new recipe themselves or ask them what they would like to bake (or eat) and do some cooking together.

Quality family time

Spending special time together with your child is good for your child’s development and wellbeing.  Play board games, read books together, play charades, write a letter to someone, or go for a walk together and spend time talking.

Build a cubby

Cubby building is a great way to spark creativity and allow children to express themselves.  Inside or outside…the possibilities are endless.  Use blankets, sheets, pillows…kids have a great imagination and you could all have fun with this one.

Create a scavenger hunt

Hide clues around the house to find a prize at the end, or try an alphabet scavenger hunt - have the children write the letters of the alphabet on a piece of paper and then move around the house trying to find something beginning with each letter of the alphabet.  Easy and fun!

Get active

Staying fit and healthy is good not only for your body, it helps your mental health too.  Go for a walk or bike ride, go to the park, jump on the trampoline, do some yoga or dance to your (or the kids) favourite songs.

Get outside for some fresh air

Even on cold winter days it is important for us all to get outside and have a break from technology.  Go outside and notice what is around.  What can you see, hear, smell, touch or taste? Look for animal shapes in the clouds, throw and catch a ball, kick the footy, or rug up and look at the stars at night.

I hope the ideas listed give you some ideas of things to do during these holidays.  Whatever you do, stay safe, stay warm, take a breath and remember to look after each other.
