Principal's Report

From the Principal

We are at the end of the first semester, which whilst not without its challenges, has provided a variety of opportunities for student learning and wellbeing growth. During the past two weeks, Year 9, 10 and 11 students have undertaken their Semester One examinations, whilst across all year levels, students have been working hard on completing final assessments for the term. Well done to all students for the ways in which they have prepared for these learning opportunities.

Being able to reflect upon a very busy term 2, it is discernible that there has been a wide range of engaging learning experiences for all year levels that continue to add to the richness of life at our College. The success of these activities, whether they be sporting, musical, dramatic, camps, or excursions is a reflection of the connection and engagement teachers and students share together and have valued, probably more than ever, following the severe disruption to normal College life over the past two years.

With the completion of term two this afternoon, we are all looking forward to a break to re-connect with family and friends. This also presents an opportune time to express thanks to the teaching and education support staff for their commitment to provide the best educational opportunities for our students; and to thank the parents of school community for continuing to support us in the development of our young people.

I trust that all of our students and staff members have a safe and enjoyable holiday.

EDSC once again supporting the Big Freeze in 2022

East Doncaster Secondary College has been proud to make our small contribution to the fight to find a cure for Motor Neurone Disease over the last seven years.

Drawing once more upon the close link between our College and the Daniher family, we were delighted that Terry Daniher could attend the College on Thursday June 9 to oversee our own EDSC Big Freeze – Ice-bucket challenge during our lunch break. A number of staff and students braved the chilly conditions to be drenched by ice buckets to raise money for this great cause.

At last count, well over $5,000.00 had been raised for this worthy cause.

Sincere congratulations to all those involved and to all that donated!

Winter Warmers Music Concerts

Congratulations to our instrumental music students and our Music staff for providing us with two entertaining and sold out ‘Winter Warmers’ Music Concerts in our Performing Arts Centre on Tuesday 7 June. The concert showcased the talents of our hard-working instrumental music ensembles and the abilities of a selection of our very talented VCE Music students. More than anything, it was so very rewarding to be able to see our young students being able to perform after having to resort to ‘virtual performances’ over the past few years. It was also very pleasing to see the number of our new Year 7 students performing with confidence, enthusiasm and wonderful smiles on their faces.

Our Music program continues to engage and impress. Well done to all involved!

Cycle 3 student reports

A reminder that our College Cycle 3 reports will be published at the commencement of the second week of the next term.

For students in the senior school, our Cycle 3 reports early next term will provide constructive feedback that informs their practices as they strive for a highly successful year and completion of their VCE examinations.

For many of our students, I would like to reinforce that it will also be an important time to recognize and celebrate their achievement and offer a positive reflection of the consistent effort they have made.

Although the reports are archived for the duration of your child's enrolment at our College, I would strongly advise that you download your own copy and save this to your home computer for your future use.

Outstanding Student Achievements

It is very pleasing to be able to report that one of our Year 12 students, Callum O’Neil, has been selected in the Boys Team Victoria Basketball Team (18 years and under) for the National competition to be held in Bendigo 13-19 August 2022. Selection for this team is highly competitive and has been made after a series of squad selection try-outs.

This is an impressive achievement from Callum that is a testament to his athletic ability, commitment and application. We wish Callum all the very best for this competition!

Staffing Changes for Term 3

From the start of term three we will have a small number of staff changes.

Paola Malatesta, Debbie Mallakoutis, Katie Sutherland, Norm Grimmett and Cameron Campbell will be absent on long service leave for varying periods of the new term. We hope that they enjoy their well-deserved breaks.

Our food technician, Gayle Colling will be on a short period of leave before retiring. Gayle has given great service to our College over a long period of time and we thank her for her contribution to the College, her input as a valued member of the Food Technology learning domain and wish her all the very best for her future.

Rebecca Tang(English/EAL) and Lilly Wang (Chinese Language Assistant) will be leaving at the end of this term after short-term contract placements. We thank Rebecca and Lilly for their efforts and their commitment to our College.

Please note - Term 3 commences on Monday 11 July.

Child safety and wellbeing at East Doncaster Secondary College: information for families and the school community

The Victorian Government has announced new Child Safe Standards to further strengthen child safety across organisations, including schools. The new standards recognise the critical importance of families and the broader school community in maintaining and promoting child safety and wellbeing.

East Doncaster Secondary College has reviewed and updated our child safety policies and procedures to ensure they meet the requirements of the new standards. These are available to view on our school’s website, on a Compass News Feed, at the school’s Reception.

We are committed to continuous improvement in our approach to child safety and wellbeing and welcome feedback from families and members of our school community on ways we can further strengthen our child safety policies, procedures and practices.
