Narrative Features

Our Foundation students are continuing to examine the features found in narratives, as well as the similarities between traditional narrative texts and media texts.

In week seven and eight, students explored setting and location in narratives. Specifically, we related this to the "Where" in the Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How of narrative storytelling.

Using Bluey as a mentor text, students watched the episode with a focus on identifying where the story was set. We explored broad definitions, such as "outside" or "in the pool", as well as more specific details, such as "Bluey's kitchen" or "In the backyard, bouncing on the trampoline".

YEAR ONE

Tieing into their classroom unit on culture uniting us as a community, the Year One students have explored how cultural stories have survived over time and become entrenched in our society.

In Week Seven, students learned the stories of the Chinese Zodiac and the historical origins of the Norse God, Thor. The children were surprised and delighted to see how events and characters they see and experience in their everyday lives have roots in traditional cultural stories, similar to the Dreamtime stories we have been researching.

YEAR TWO

In week seven, students added slogans to their print advertisement photos of canned tomatoes, having chosen stylised fonts to produce them in.

Having successfully completed print ads, the Year Twos will now be moving on to radio advertisements of the same products. Working in pairs, they will develop a script, practise recording, before recording during a session with their teacher. They will need to include adjectives, benefits of their product, their slogan, and add music to their final piece.

YEAR THREE

During week seven, Year Three students were presented with their final assessment piece. As students have been learning about still-image narratives and creating them from teacher-directed prompts, they will now be creating and developing their own ideas.

Working in groups, students will brainstorm, plan, develop, shoot and publish still-image narratives of their own. They will utilise the photography skills they have developed during the semester and put them into practice.

YEAR FOUR

Our Year Four students are continuing their new unit, analysing media works to develop their understanding of narrative techniques. Using the all-Indigenous produced TV show Thalu as a mentor text, the students have explore symbolism and metaphors in texts, as well as decoding language.

Throughout these lessons, connections are made to the students' own writing pieces and how in Media and writing the same narrative principles are followed.
