Year Five News

Dear Year Five families,

This week, students have been continuing exploring our sixth Unit of Inquiry for the year. Students have been focusing their learning under the transdisciplinary theme of How We Express Ourselves. They have made an excellent start to the unit and have shown an appreciation for and enthusiasm towards the learning.

Unit of Inquiry

This week, the students have been exposed to different provocation tasks to get them thinking about different forms of art and how the arts can challenge our thinking. Students have investigated people like Susan Boyle and Michael Jackson, and different places such as Hosier Lane, to see how others have used the arts to share a message. They have begun selecting and researching into a social issue that they wish to express their feelings about through art. Students will soon begin to create their art pieces for our mini-exhibition.

English

In reading and writing tasks, students have been continuing their unit on poetry. Students have now practised using different forms of figurative language to express their emotions. The students read many different poems to help them understand more about poetry, including ones relating to Remembrance Day such as In Flanders Fields.  They have experimented creating different types of poems such as Haikus, Limericks, Lanterns, and Cinquains. The students will continue to learn about other types of poems, and how they could use them to express how they feel about their social issue of interest.

Mathematics

In maths lessons, students have been continuing to practise their skills in shape and geometric reasoning. This will help them when creating their art piece to represent their social issue. Students have created 3D objects and displayed their understanding of the key features of 3D objects. They have now been practising their skills with a protractor to help them further understand angles. Students will be participating in fluid groupings targeted at their level to help them in their next step understandings of geometric reasoning.

Reminders

In Term 4, students are required to wear hats outside. Our policy is 'No Hat, No Play'. Students who do not have a hat will be directed to the shaded area near the canteen to protect them from the sun.

A reminder that the gravel area at the front of 5A, 5B, 5C, and 5D is now out of bounds during recess and lunch times. Students in these classes are allowed to use it to go to and from class.

During continuous entry times 8:15 - 8:30, students are not to enter the school via the office. They need to use the gates around the school. However, if students arrive after 8:30 then they need to enter at the office and sign in for a late pass.

Student-Led Three-Way Conference

Our Term Four Student Led Three Way Conferences will be held on Tuesday 6 December, 2022. Bookings are open and parents can book a time between 12.30pm - 7.00pm to celebrate student success and achievements.
