Year Four News

Written by the Year Four Team

Dear Year Four families,

Within the past fortnight, students have been working hard as they continue to explore the central idea of our sixth Unit of Inquiry ' Patterns may only be evident at a certain time.'

LITERACY

In Reading, students continued to develop their understanding and knowledge about a text. They analysed how diagrams can be connected to the written text and created their own diagram demonstrating the earth's rotation and revolution. The posters were creative and informative and contained specific vocabularies such as the North Pole, South pole, Axis, Northern hemisphere, Southern hemisphere and Equator. Thinking routines have also been utilised to encourage students to build connections with the text while identifying themes and ideas.

During fluid reading groups, students have been exploring and analysing different text genres such as persuasive, procedural, narratives, and information reports and answering NAPLAN-style comprehension questions.

In Writing, there has been a  focus on improving basic computer skills such as typing accuracy and building stamina. Students have been really engaged with practising touch typing through Typing Club and typing speed tests. Additionally, students conducted simple science experiments by following a procedural text, recording their observations, collecting data and analysing the information before concluding. This was an excellent way to incorporate STEM with our Inquiry about patterns.

MATHEMATICS

With a current focus on Units of Measurement, students have been learning about using scaled instruments to measure and compare length, mass and capacity.  Students became confident in comparing objects using standard metric units of area and volume.

Reminders

Hat policy

As the weather warms up, students must wear hats outside during playtime. Students who do not have a hat will be asked to spend their play time under the shaded area. Saltwater school hats can be purchased at the front office for convenience.
