Hello, Year 2 families,
We've had a very busy and fun past few days in Year 2 with our Cultural Picnic, NAPLAN preparation, and assessments for not only the end of the year but also to help support our students into the new year. Let's take a look at just some of the things they have been up to over this past week...
Reading
In reading, students have been working towards building their ability to develop their critical thinking skills when reading a short text. These skills are important to help students development of comprehension of what they have just read.
Over the last few weeks, students have been looking at different strategies including ‘right there', ‘think and search’, ‘author and you’ and ‘on my own’. Students also revisited Reader’s Theatre to improve on their reading skills and overall reading confidence.
Please find below some question starters that can help to support reading comprehension at home.
Writing
In writing, students have been developing their writing stamina working their way into the writing expectations that they will find during NAPLAN in Year 3. During these reading sessions, students are given 5 minutes to plan their piece after a prompt and 40 minutes to develop a piece of writing with a clear structure and editing. This is to ensure students have considered how to break up their time purposefully.
Mathematics
In maths, students have been building their understanding around multiplication and how to utilise different strategies to solve these problems. Students have looked into solving problems using arrays, number lines, repeated addition and also in a worded format. As always the year 2 students have been working in their fluid groups on Tuesday and Thursday to support students more specifically on a targeted needs basis.
In addition to this, we have also had the opportunity to solve some general math problems in more of a NAPLAN format to support students as they head towards Year 3.
Inquiry
In inquiry, our students have started the process of compiling their research into a poster or recording/presentation for their 'taking action' stage. During this stage, students will present information about a celebration that they personally do not celebrate and share it with others from their class, this way they can consolidate their knowledge with their peers. Once complete students will look again over their rubrics prior to the final assessment for this unit (which can be found on our Year 2 SchoolBox page under the transdisciplinary theme of 'How we Express Ourselves').
Cultural Picnic
The Cultural Picnic for our Year Two Families was a huge success. What better way to delve into our Central Idea 'People express important events through celebrations and traditions' than coming together as a community to share our favourite cultural dishes. We enjoyed many dishes, dressing up in cultural clothes and socialising with our community. We would like to say a huge thank you to our parents for attending and providing such delicious food. The students had a wonderful time and enjoyed tasting a variety of dishes.

Kind regards,
