Secondary

Dear Families

Welcome back for Term 2! We hope that students and families enjoyed a restful break and quality time with friends and family over Easter and the holiday. It has been wonderful having students back on campus this week and we are impressed with how they have settled back into the new term. Congratulations to students and staff involved in this year’s College musical Legally Blonde, whose months of hard work have culminated in a series of high energy and joyful performances for the audiences this week to enjoy. A very special thank you, also, to the dedicated parents who have been an incredible support behind the scenes.

Our Senior Rowers enjoyed a successful tour over the holidays in Augusta as part of their preparation for this term’s season. We look forward to seeing their leadership in action at training and regattas throughout the term. Thank you to Jerram Gibson, Head Coach, his team of coaches and parent helpers for supporting students through this valuable experience.

On Monday’s professional learning day, Secondary teaching staff engaged in collegial discussion to reflect on their classroom practice and support student learning. Staff reviewed their 2023 goals and engaged in a peer coaching model to reflect, refine and set new actions for the term ahead. They also spent time planning strategies to enhance the ability for students to recall and retain their learning, known as ‘retrieval practice’. Another session focused on effective approaches to support the engagement and learning of students diagnosed with ADHD.

Please see below for key Term 2 dates:

  • Loreto House Day: Thursday 4 May
  • Interhouse Cross-Country: Friday 5 May (Periods 3 to 6)
  • Secondary Photo Days: Tuesday 9 May and Tuesday 16 May (sibling and catch-up photos)
  • Mass for mothers and mother figures: Thursday 11 May, 7:30am
  • Year 9 PLUS Camp: Monday 15 May to Wednesday 17 May
  • Year 11 and 12 Examinations: Monday 22 May to Friday 2 June

Wishing students the very best for the term ahead.

Pulse Perspectives

WA's talented young artists are celebrated in this yearly showcase, Pulse Perspectives, gauging the pulse of young people who will influence, empower and shape the world we live in.

The selected works provide a window into young people’s private, social and artistic concerns. It is an inspiring, rewarding and insightful look at the world through the minds of our most talented young artists.

This year’s exhibition celebrates 31 years and features 61 works by 2022 Year 12 Visual Arts graduates from 36 schools across Western Australia.

Congratulations to John XXIII College Alumnus, Kirsten McCormick (Class 2022), for having her artwork selected to be shown in Pulse Perspectives. The exhibition opens to the public on Saturday 29 April at the Art Gallery of Western Australia.

The Youth Award allows entrants to showcase their works and present their unique artistic perspectives; helps build their confidence to further their art practice; and allows them to share their stories with the wider community.

Congratulations to John XXIII Alumnus, Stella Sampson (Class 2022), for having her artwork selected as a finalist in this year’s Lester Prize. The exhibition is open to the public until Sunday 16 July 2023 at The WA Museum Boola Bardip.

STEM Drone Club

The College possesses a number of drones for the students to learn to fly. Students start off flying the TELLO drones and once they show competence and an awareness of the flying rules, then they progress to the Mavic Mini 3 drones that are a lot more capable but a little harder to fly. Students flying these drones are working towards the completion of more complex tasks in order to obtain the JTC Pilot’s license.

Any student is able to join the STEM Drone Club and no experience is necessary. If a student already has a drone, they are encouraged to bring it along. A meeting for 2023 students who like to fly drones will be held in the next week to discuss flying times.

Dungeons & Dragons Club (D&D)

D&D is a role-playing game that allows students to work cooperatively, imaginatively and positively with like-minded young people on an online adventure campaign led by a Dungeon Master (DM) whose role to flesh out the scenario as the campaign develops.

The D&D Club is for students and generally run by students. Experienced players are encouraged to become a DM for an adventure so that other students can play. Every year several students volunteer to run different campaigns for different experience levels. Most campaigns run for at least 6 months during the school year and these adventures normally occur in the College Library after school one afternoon per week.

Mr Connellan will continue to run “The Lost Mines of Phandelver” with his group of Year 11 students. Caleb Falkner Hill is running a campaign for Year 8 students, Nils Soderstrom is running his campaign for a group of Year 7 students and Alex Roberts is continuing his campaign for more experienced players.

Chess Club

Last year the Chess Club was formed and many students now play chess at lunchtimes. Every term the students will play in a round robin format that runs for that term in the Library. The highlight of the Chess Club is the Magis Chess competition played in the middle of the year.

A meeting will be held in the College Library in Week 2 of Term 2 to take the names of students who wish to play social chess in Term 2. The Magis Chess Tournament will commence next week, with the rounds to be displayed in the Library.

Like last year, Primary school students will have a term where they play chess in an internal competition. This will occur in Term 3.
