MARVELOUS MATHEMATICIANS @ ST BRIGID'S!

Thinking outside the box and having an ability to explore numbers is a great strategy to have in our tool kits when it comes to Mathematics.  Noggle is a great way to foster this exploration of numbers.

Growing up you may remember playing the game Boggle - where we were given a collection of letters and had to make as many words as we could using those letters. Well Noggle is the same concept except with numbers. In Noggle you are given a collection of different numbers but also a target number. The aim is to use the numbers given to create as many equations, using any of the four processes (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), that you can to reach the target number.  I have used this in the classroom before with great success, so I thought I would share it with the St Brigid’s community.

Feel free to email me or bring in your work to show me.  Have fun exploring numbers!

PENTECOST

This weekend we celebrate Pentecost. The word Pentecost is Greek and it means "50th day."   Fifty days after Easter Sunday, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and their followers, and the beginning of their Earthly ministry to make disciples of all nations.

At Pentecost, the Apostles and their followers were gathered in a room.  Jews from all over the world were gathered with Peter, the leader of the Apostles and the Eleven.  At this time, a great wind blew and a flame appeared as a tongue of fire, which split itself into many individual flames above the heads of all those present. The Holy Spirit came upon these people and each began to speak in tongues. Despite the fact many had no common language, they were perfectly able to understand one another. Peter then called all those present to be baptized and about three thousand people were baptized that day.

These people were among the first Catholics, and Peter is the first pope of the Catholic Church.

The symbols of Pentecost are the flame, wind, and the dove, which represents the Holy Spirit. The color of Pentecost is red and the priest wears red vestments on this day. Parishioners are also invited to wear red on this day.

Pentecost is known as the birthday of the Catholic Church. Today we celebrate keeping in mind the words of Pope Francis

“Today, more than ever, it is necessary to implore the Holy Spirit to pour forth into our hearts the life of God, who is love. Indeed, if there is to be a better future, our hearts must change for the better

NATIONAL SORRY DAY

Every year on 26 May, National Sorry Day remembers and acknowledges the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, which we now know as ‘The Stolen Generations’.

National Sorry Day is a day to acknowledge the strength of Stolen Generations Survivors and reflect on how we can all play a part in the healing process for our people and nation. While this date carries great significance for the Stolen Generations and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, it is also commemorated by Australians right around the country.

National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week – 27 May to 3 June – is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2023 is Be a Voice for Generations.

The theme encourages all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways in our everyday lives – where we live, work and socialise.

For the work of generations past, and the benefit of generation's future, we are asked to act today for a more just, equitable and reconciled country for all.

“Today, more than ever, it is necessary to implore the Holy Spirit to pour forth into our hearts the life of God, who is love. Indeed, if there is to be a better future, our hearts must change for the better." Pope Francis

DIGITAL WELLBEING

In 2021, Leonie Smith conducted an online parent esafety webinar for our St Brigid’s parents. I continue to follow Leonie’s blog. This article from March tells us about the data that FACEBOOK collect and highlights the apps features and potential risks of FACEBOOK Kids Messenger.  Leonie also suggests how you can best address these and continue to support your child to be safe online.
