Cross Country Celebrations

As families are aware, students in Middle + Senior School participated in Cross Country at the end of Week 1. Sporting days are always a cause for excitement - all that hard work and training has finally paid off! Students achieving PB record times, making a goal to finish one place higher than the previous year, or to beat a particular sports rival.

But during the day, myself and other teachers were celebrating for different reasons. This year in particular was an outstanding example of sportsmanship, support and resilience from students. We were blown away with non-stop examples of kindness, generosity and encouragement throughout the day. Before races, students were offering up kind words of motivation, reminding each other “it’s just about having a try!”. During races, students banded together to support each other across the finish line, whether that was walking, skipping, jogging or running. Even after completing races, numerous students remained at the finish line encouraging and cheering on their peers - even with the temptation of those delicious donuts!

The weather presented a rainy challenge on the day, but yet again, this was another obstacle the students leapt over with ease. Students’ selflessness wasn’t unnoticed - kids sharing jumpers, jackets, space undercover, even creating a group shelter with one raincoat. One particular instance of a Grade 6 student giving up their only jumper to a cold, shivering Grade 3 student (who was completely unaware we noticed) warmed our hearts. Any students that were unwell or injured consistently had friends checking in with them at the First Aid station – looking after mates is what students cared about the most!

It was inspiring to see such a supportive and positive environment before, during and after the races. All students are to be congratulated on their resilience, determination and compassion - what great way to start Term 2!
