Legacy 100 Year’s Relay Baton

The Legacy 100 Years Relay Baton was held over 3 days – 11th to the 13th May. Our Big Childcare educator Cheryl Le Brun was proud to be chosen as the second to last torch bearer, chosen as a Legacy representative and took part in the Adelaide Relay.

The event began on the 11th with the Airforce Base holding an Open Day.

The next day was the torch relay which

started at Keswick Barracks at 9 am to conclude at National War Memorial at 2 pm.

Cheryl said:

"While we were at Muster at 7 am the Governor General introduced herself to me as ‘Frances’ as she was in the uniform of a Torch Bearer, and I was unaware she was the Governor General.  She was our 1st, Torch Bearer.

The day’s weather was beautiful, a little overcast, cool breeze so none of us felt hot and bothered.

All 50 of the Torch Bearers made it to the finish line with Police and Military Escort.

Adelaide set the record for the largest number of Torch Bearers and the Longest Relay Path.

Being part of the Fabulous Five meant that the first 2 and last 3 Torch bearers were selected by

Legacy SA and Broken Hill – and all the others were placed by Event Organisers.

My leg of the Relay was from King William Road along Victoria Drive to corner of Kintore Ave.

Then we followed the final 2 bearers to the National War Memorial with the beat of the Drum Corp, where the lighting of the Caldron and Remembering the Solders (The Oath) took place. It was emotional at this point where we all had last family members to various Companies. It had special meaning to me as my Father fought in Korea - 70th Anniversary of Korea and 100th For Legacy.

At 2.30 pm we headed to Government House – through a side door (with Security) and on to Afternoon tea with the Governor General. She is a lovely lady and very welcoming and I got to use Thank You, Your Excellency this time and she just gave me a lovely smile.

The 13th May was celebrated as a Family Day at the Torrens Parade Legacy Office where heaps of activities were available for families to enjoy."

Congratulations Cheryl from everyone at Edenhope College.
