Experiential Learning
On Friday, the Year 7/8s did our Experiential Learning program. This is our second time doing Experiential Learning. We made sausages and played hide and seek both weeks. Also, people brought one food item to share with everyone, and Mrs Heffernan gave us a diary to write in to help us remember all the learning we do in Experiential Learning.
This week we did some more learning about who owned this land for thousands of years before us and worked on some leadership skills. For acknowledgements of country, it is important to know that Aboriginal Peoples did not give their land away, it was taken from them, and that is part of why we acknowledge them.
In our leadership skills work, we thought about how we should be grateful for what we have because some people don’t have as much as us. That helps us be good leaders as we understand that we should always be kind to everyone because we never know what’s going on in someone’s life as you’re not walking in someone else’s shoes. After this we went on an 8km walk from the Football/Netball club to a nice little outside space in the pines. We made two groups and each group made a fire. We had no fire starters, each group had to build a fire with just one match and a bunch of twigs and logs. Once the fire got started, they put a hot plate on and started to cook the sausages. The first group’s sausages were really good, but some of the second group’s sausages were cooked straight on the flames and were a bit crispy, but they were still nice with the smokiness. We used our leadership skills to work together and make our fires, making sure we were very careful so no one would get hurt.
I’m looking forward to our next Experiential Learning because I’m interested in seeing what we’re going to be learning about!
