Instrumental Music at GEC

The 2018 College Instrumental Music teaching team consists of:

  • Mr Robert Westlake – guitar and bass on Monday and Wednesday (currently being replaced by Mr Daniel Hobson)
  • Mr Mark Voogd – drums and percussion on Monday
  • Mr Mark Dipnall – woodwind on Monday
  • Ms Victoria Wood – voice on Tuesday and Thursday
  • Ms Zamarah Morley – strings on Wednesday and Thursday
  • Ms Charlene Wijaya – piano on Thursday and Friday

This year there has been an increased demand for places in the Instrumental Music program at GEC, resulting in some students being placed on a waiting list for Voice, Guitar and Piano. However, at this stage there are a small number of places available to learn Woodwind, Drums/Percussion and Strings – if any student is interested in enrolling please pick up a form from the General Office, or for more information please contact Ms Baker-Goldsmith.

Radio Club

Are you a confident speaker, or interested in improving your public speaking skills? Do you like working as part of team? You might be interested in joining the GEC Radio Club in 2018!

Radio Club gives groups of students from the college the opportunity to prepare, organise and then present their own hour-long radio show live on the air. A number of times per term (usually once every 2-3 weeks), students meet early on a Thursday morning and make their way to in North Brighton to present a morning breakfast radio show live on the air on 88.3 Southern FM. The radio show can include conversations and music, but it is up to the group to decide what they would like to present during their hour on air. After the radio show there is a debriefing to discuss what went well and what could be improved for the next show.

If you are interested in participating in one of our next shows, contact Ms Baker-Goldsmith or come along to our weekly meetings on Wednesdays in the Room 1.

Broadcast dates this term – GEC on the air from 8am-9am:

8th March

22nd March

2018 Production

This year, the GEC school production will be Little Shop of Horrors.

Over 4 days of auditions we saw students try out for the show in areas that included singing, acting and dancing. We were overwhelmed by the level of talent that was on display and the improvement that students have shown. We have 66 students involved in the cast this year and 32 of these are Year 7 students.

The show is set in downtown Skid Row, where there are bums on the street and a little flower shop that struggles to make ends meet. There we meet Seymour, Audrey and Mrs Muchnik. The story takes us on a wild and exciting adventure that includes love, death and humour. We have amazing talent not only in our leads but also within the smaller roles that provide us with some comedic relief.

This year we will be having a band to create a live amazing atmosphere to this incredible cast that we are very excited to watch grow and be a part of a team. Please stay tuned for more updates.
