HM's message

There is a joke going around just at the moment that when “Peče celá země” (effectively our equivalent of  The Great British Bake-off) finishes it will be replaced with “Šije celá země” (The Great Czech Sew-off)!! The wonderful creation I am wearing was made by the wife of one of our caretakers, Libor. She is just one of hundreds of thousands of public-spirited Czechs who are sewing their way through this lockdown. “How many do you want?,” Libor asked. I wasn’t sure what the right answer was but eventually I ended up with four masks, including a wonderful pink, yellow and brown striped one looking for all the world like a Neapolitan ice cream. Up until that point I had been struggling with a cowboy-style neckerchief which made my glasses steam up and my cheeks go bright red!

Masks, eschewed as unnecessary in the UK, have become a visual symbol of the fight against the Covid-19 virus here in the Czech Republic. For me masks represent just one of many unexpected transformations inspired by this crisis. Starting out in my mind, as an unwelcome and slightly sinister barrier between people, they have become, in my mind at least, a sign of the immense collective effort to protect each other and work together as a people. I have noticed a similar twist in the impact of the physical separation that our teachers and students have experienced during the school’s enforced closure. While we all miss the classroom - teachers and students alike - the physical separation has, through the crisis, been transformed into a powerful and supportive force. Each side is willing to help the other to manage and succeed in this new learning partnership.

In the feedback we have received from students, there is palpable support and appreciation for the teachers who, in learning new skills, are keeping classes running. Teachers, for their part, more than ever before perhaps, are carefully listening to the pupils trying to pick up nuances about how they are coping. One student even went so far as to say, “I love how everyone is communicating and being open to the students. It feels like teachers and students have bonded more over the past few weeks”. We are surrounded by uncertainty, shifting and unpredictable course of events, but the school community has, in the nature of the paradoxes that this situation has created, become closer together than ever.

V těchto dnech se v Česku vtipkuje o tom, že až skončí „Peče celá země“ (v podstatě ekvivalent britského Great British Bake-Off), nastoupí „Šije celá země“! Úžasná rouška, kterou mám na fotografii, je dílem manželky našeho pana školníka Libora. Je jen jednou ze stovek tisíc veřejnosti pomáhajících Čechů, kteří se karanténou prošívají. „Kolik roušek chcete?," zeptal se mě Libor. Nebyl jsem si jistý, jaká je správná odpověď, ale nakonec jsem dostal čtyři, včetně nádherné s růžovo-žluto-hnědými pruhy, která vypadá jako neapolská zmrzlina. Do té doby jsem se potýkal s kovbojským nákrčníkem, kvůli kterému jsem měl zamlžené brýle a jasně červené tváře!

Roušky, které se ve Velké Británii považují za zbytečné, se staly vizuálním symbolem boje proti koronaviru zde v České republice. Roušky pro mě představují jednu z mnoha neočekávaných transformací způsobených touto krizí. Dříve jsem je vnímal jako nevítanou a mírně neblahou bariéru mezi lidmi, zatímco nyní jsou, alespoň v mé mysli, znakem ohromného kolektivního úsilí navzájem se chránit a spolupracovat jako lid. Podobného zvratu jsem si všiml i v dopadu fyzického odloučení, které naši učitelé a studenti zažívají během nuceného uzavření školy. Zatímco nám všem, učitelům i žákům, chybí školní třídy, fyzické odloučení se díky krizi transformovalo na mocnou a podpůrnou sílu. Každá strana je ochotna pomoci té druhé zvládnout toto nové vzdělávací partnerství a uspět.

Od studentů máme zpětnou vazbu, v níž vyjadřují jasnou podpora a ocenění učitelům, kteří díky osvojení si nových technických dovedností udržují výuku v chodu. Učitelé ještě více než kdykoli předtím pečlivě naslouchají žákům a snaží se vnímat to, jak se jim daří vše zvládnout. Jeden student nám dokonce sdělil následující: „Moc se mi líbí, jak všichni učitelé komunikují a jsou vůči studentům otevření. Vypadá to, že učitelé a studenti se během posledních týdnů ještě více propojili.“ Jsme obklopeni nejistotou, změnami a nepředvídatelným chodem událostí, ale naše školní komunita se paradoxně v této situaci sblížila více než kdykoli předtím.
