Dear Parents

From the start of today’s Assembly, it was obvious to see that John XXIII really has got talent! The Year 3B students were certainly the stars of the show, with their combination of poetry and rap moves. Special thanks to Mr Fromm and the terrific three’s for bringing poetry alive so creatively.

Last night the College hosted a ‘Volunteers Thank You’ evening at Wembley Golf Club to thank all the parents who have assisted in many ways during 2017 both in classes and in many other areas of the school. It is tremendous to have this level of support displayed in the development of both the children and the whole school community. Many activities could not be planned without this involvement and generous commitment of time and energy generously given by all our volunteers.  We greatly value and appreciate the support that has been provided to the staff and students throughout the year.

A big thank you to all those who have already volunteered to be a parent representative next year. We still need parent reps for Year 6 2018 – please consider putting up your hand to assist in your child’s final year of Primary school.

Our EduDance Showcases are just around the corner! Please start collecting the required items for your child to wear on the day. Costume list is attached.

All ‘G’ classes will be showcasing their dance moves on Monday 4 December at 2.00pm in the Gym.

All ‘B’ classes will be showcasing their dance moves on Wednesday 6 December at 2.00pm in the Gym.

First Lego League

On Sunday 12 November the Year 6 GATE students participated in the exciting First Lego League (FFL) competition.

This is a competition catering for upper-primary and lower-secondary school students. Every year, teams of up to 10 students build, program and compete with a robot, while also learning about a modern problem in science and engineering and developing solutions for it. FFL is run with the feel of a sporting event, and teams compete like crazy while having the time of their lives.

Our Year 6 teams, ‘Water Wizards’ and ‘Hydrodaleks’ produced amazing innovative solutions and presentations about this year’s theme ‘Hydrodynamics’ It was a fun, exciting and inspirational Science and technology experience for the GATE students.

Last weekend the Year 6 GATE students participated in the FIRST® LEGO® League competition at Curtin University. The two teams, Hydro Daleks (6B) and the Water Wizards (6G), had an amazing time learning all about Hydro Dynamics. Over the eight weeks leading up to the competition we learned how humans use, dispose, find and move water. We also got closer as a team and improved out skills to code robots. On the day it was very full on with 4 different exciting aspects, including Project Judging, Core, Values Judging, Robot Judging and the Robot Game. The Hydro Daleks ‘robot’, Hydro Hero, accomplished one consecutive mission in the three times we had at the Robot Game and came 20th overall. We had fun and thoroughly enjoyed it all. On the weekend, at Curtin University, the Year 6 GATE cohort had the fantastic opportunity to enter the 'First Lego League' competition. This involved a focused eight weeks prior to the event, studying, researching and learning about this seasons topic of 'Hydrodynamics'. As two teams, the 'Water Wizards' and the 'Hydrodaleks' we learnt about how to code a robot to complete several missions and about the 'Core Values' which are important team skills and qualities. We also worked on a research question, which involved identifying a problem and composing an innovative solution regarding the question. During the season, three of us worked on the robotics component of the challenge while the remaining four, worked on the research team. They discovered a problem affecting the human water cycle and worked on a way to fix it. On the day of the competition, both John XXIII teams were anxious but excited for the competition to commence. Overall, our judging sessions went extremely well. The judges were very kind and commented encouragingly and also asked interesting questions on our project. In my opinion, our 'Core Values' judging ran wonderfully because we worked cooperatively together to solve the spontaneous challenge.

I think that my experience of the 'First Lego League' this year, was very memorable, fun and exciting. I became extended and challenged to 'think outside the box' to complete different aspects of the program. I would love to continue 'FLL' in my up-coming years and do hope that if any other year groups are going to enter the competition that they make the most of the experience too.

The Year 1’s have been talking about geographical features and they learnt how to write the words ‘mountain’ and ‘river’ in Japanese.

The Year 3’s have been learning about the ‘shichi go san festival’. This Japanese festival is a special celebration for the boys and girls who are 3, boys who are 5 and girls who are 7.

Gardening Club

As our days are now full of splendid sunshine our garden in Angelo’s Village needs lots of water to help it grow. Special thanks to Violet Worner, Ruby Verleg, Lola Denton and Coco Kenny for watering our glorious garden. Our rockmelon, strawberries and spinach are doing very well!

Well done to all the students who received a certificate for their fantastic achievements.
