Science – Term 3 Newsletter

Truganina South Primary School hosted an event called “Kids Teaching Kids.” Students from three local schools presented a lesson on sustainability to the Emerald community, and some students from the TSPS Green Team presented a lesson on Frog Habitats. This program is designed to empower students to be the change they wish to see in the world while facilitating community connections and is undertaken by thousands of kids around Australia each year. Well done to all of the students and teachers involved.

Ten grade 5/6 students have been chosen to lead the Extinction Fighters Campaign. They had the opportunity to participate in a live web conference with Werribee Zoo experts and learn about local endangered species, in particular the Eastern Barred Bandicoot. They are visiting the zoo on Friday and will be presenting to the zoo experts and other schools about how to make Wydham greener in the future. We raised $37 in 5 cent pieces for the badicoot. That’s 740 coins! Thank you to everyone who participated.

The “War On Waste” began this Term. Students and teachers have joined forces to become waste Warriors and fight for the environment. We have altered the way we do recycling to make sure we get it right and we have implemented Nude Food Fridays. Please bring nude food with no wrappers on Fridays for your chance to win a badge! The community with the most nude food will be announced at assembly each fortnight.

The preps have continued exploring how things move throughout term 3. They have been developing their scientific inquiry skills by making predictions, testing them and recording their observations. The grade 1/2’s have been investigating push and pull forces. They have tested objects to see if they sink or float and have drawn force arrow diagrams to show the forces acting on objects.

The grade 3/4’s have been studying forces this term. They built air powered cars, measured friction with a Newton scale and investigated different sized forces using elastic band catapults. The grade 5/6’s have been learning about electricity. They have constructed a circuit, tested various metals to see if they conduct electricity and experimented with kits to make magnet powered fans and different types of sounds.

Any students interested in taking care of the pet guinea pigs or spiny leaf insects over the September school holidays please see Vanessa.
