Jones House Week

Waste Warriors

During week 3 of term 3, we, the Jones house leadership team have embarked on our environmental conservation and preservation house week. When deciding on what to focus on, we knew we wanted to raise environmental awareness, especially with current global climate concerns. We wanted to make a difference and raise money for that cause, but no individual charity jumped out at us, until we looked at our own schools’ problems. Girton had little to no recycling options, so we set out to change that.

First, we wanted to target the younger year levels, holding kahoot quizzes and talks during the year 7 and 8 house tutor times on the Monday and Tuesday, teaching them about proper recycling techniques, and energy conservation principles.

On Wednesday, thanks to our year 11 house tutor group, we managed to get the whole school involved in a lunch time trash pickup exercise where we rewarded students for going around the school picking up rubbish.

On the Thursday, we did a school wide “white out”, tasking the students, and teachers, to limit unnecessary use of lights and heating around the school, and to appeal to more natural lighting sources from the wide array of windows at Girton.

Finally, to conclude our house week, we launched a sausage sizzle on the Friday, who’s money will go towards the purchasing of new recycling bins. Overall the week is a massive success, and our focus on education and practical implementation enabled us to get the whole school involved to make a change that will hopefully outlast us current prefects at Girton.

“I was pleased to know that there are helpful teachers like Ms Jackson that can help me understand what goes in the organic bin, for example: leaves”
