MVPS Swimming Program

2019 Swimming Program

Mount View Primary School

In a positive step forward towards preventing drowning death and injury in Victoria, The Victorian Curriculum Prep – Year 10, being implemented in all Victorian Government and Catholic schools from 2017, now requires swimming and water safety programs to be taught as part of Health and Physical Education in the Victorian Curriculum.

We have finally found a pool that can accommodate our numbers and teach the skills required within the Victorian Curriculum and also provide an extension program for those stronger swimmers and set up a progressive swimming plan to cater for all our students across their 7 years at school regardless of their prior experience.

Swimworld Glen Waverley have worked with us to provide a program that not only teaches the Victorian Curriculum but extends the skills of those children who we know can already pass this component in preparation for the requirements of secondary school.

As this is a required part of the Victorian Curriculum all students of ALL swimming abilities will be participating in our school swimming program.  All students will travel to and from the pool with their class.

Since swimming is part of the Victorian Curriculum those who do not participate in the swimming program will not be meet the requirements of the curriculum. This will be assessed and reported on in their student reports.

A lot of work has gone into providing a program that meets the needs of all students.  Our Year 1 and 2 Students have already completed their program with great success and were very challenged with many of the skills that have not been provided in our swimming lessons in the past.  Our Year 3 & 4 students will begin learning the requirements of the Victorian Water Safety Certificate as well as progressing their overall swimming ability.

The Year 5 students will be pre tested on the Victorian Water Safety Certificate and based on this assessment will either progress to a squad swimming program or learn the essential skills required to pass the certificate at the completion of their swimming program. The Year 6 students who demonstrate a high level of swimming ability will be challenged by completing a recognised Royal Surf Life Saving Bronze Star Certificate so that ALL children will be challenged and provided for.  This Bronze Star Certificate leads into Curriculum requirements in secondary school in preparation for their Bronze Medallion.

This year any Year 5 and 6 student who passes the Victorian Water Safety Certificate will be invited to attend a Surf Day in Term 4.

To pass the Victorian Water Safety Certificate the following standards must be met:

theory component (answer set questions on water safety)

swim 50m continuously using a sound breathing and stroke technique

complete 25m of freestyle and 25m of 1 other recognisable stroke

enter the water safely whilst fully clothed, float, skull or tread water for 5 minutes, remove their outer layer of clothing in the water and exit the water safely

demonstrate an effective reach rescue and a throw rescue to a patient 5m from the edge.

SWIMMING IS PART OF THE VICTORIAN CURRICULUM AND THEREFORE IT IS REQUIRED THAT WE REPORT ON THEIR SWIMMING ABILITY IN THEIR END OF YEAR REPORTS.

Those who attempt but still do not pass the certificate will still be recorded as participating.
