Year 5/6 R.E.A.L Robotics

Congratulations to this year’s team who competed in the First Lego League’s R.E.A.L Robotics competition. The Tarneit Robo Titan’s won the best presentation award! Go TRT!

What I learnt: Solutions aren’t always simple or intermediate - they can be advanced and require teamwork to brainstorm a solution feasible.

The best part of this year’s Robotics is teamwork and having humour in our script (IMO).

Best club ever!

The R.E.A.L Robotics club was one of the best opportunities of my life, putting it straight.

But it is so much more than that! There were many times where I felt incredible with achievement and other when I felt that I was letting the team down. I felt connected to this program and all that was in it. From building the first robot to our eventual competition stride it was an incredible experience. I don’t know anything else that could replace it. It was incredibly helpful to build not only mine but others teamwork skills. That was definitely one of the main focuses on this program. And if you look at it just by its name it looks like you’re doing one thing, robotics, but it’s so much more than that. There are 4 main areas, core values which is teamwork. Presentation, which is when you have to make a unique and inspiring presentation and solution to a problem in the world. Robot design, which is how you make your robot and how efficient it is. And finally the robot game. In this you have to program your robot, using blocks to complete certain missions and challenges in return for points. There is lots of hard work put into all these areas. A thing that would make the programming part better is, having more coding opportunities. What I mean by this is being able to have more blocks, or even code in JavaScript. I know this is out of Miss Rados' and Miss Dellios' control, it would make programming a lot better.

I like having lots of sessions, almost 1 each day. It helped keep me on track and my mind always thinking of ways to solve our problems.

That brings me on to my last part. Challenges and problems.

This is the main part of the program. Our goal was to always solve our problems, using teamwork skills, or anything else we could do. It was incredible to get the sign of relief after spending hours on something and to know all your work finally paid off. It was incredible to know your team had your back and it was incredible to meet all these amazing people.

Year 2 Sleep Over

Hello everyone… well today I am going to introduce myself. My name is Vihaan and I am from Mr Page’s class (2CP). I am going to talk about the Year 2 sleepover.

Firstly, we started with some little activities, they were football, relays, soccer, basketball and playing on the playgrounds too. After that, we gathered together for a mini assembly. We talked about the expectations and what we were going to do. Then we did more little activities.

Secondly, we all came together again and we all ate pizza. We had veg and cheese pizza. It was delicious and tasty. After we ate, we waited for 45 minutes and then we had ICYPOLES! It was freezing and my tongue was burning. Then we brushed our teeth and changed our clothes and got ready for the amazing time of all… the movies! The movies were Ice Age, Shrek, Toy Story 3 and Minions. I chose Minions and it was sooo funny.

When we all got tired and when the movies finished we all slept. Some people were snoring but it was quiet. We had lots of food for breakfast. Everything was yummy and mouth-watering. I hope you enjoyed this recount!

Year 2 Sleepover by Vihaan 2CP

On the 25 October we had the most thrilling night.  Do you know what we did? Well, we had the Year 2 Sleepover in Building A which helped us to get ready for camp next year. There were so many fun activities, even an adventurous obstacle course and a brilliant daylight disco too! We were so lucky we couldn’t believe it! We also had a lot of fun movies that we got to watch at night in our pyjamas.

The boys slept in one room and the girls slept on the other side …. . we felt very brave because we had lots of friends around to help and encourage us pack and organise our bags. It was so easy to go to sleep listening to the teacher read a soothing story over the speaker.

Our dinner was scrumptious and delicious full of pizza, juice boxes and icy poles. Our breakfast was crunchy apples, soft croissants, fresh muffins, cheesy bread and strawberry and chocolate milk. We felt so full of luxury, food and happiness, we wanted to POP!. We wish we could do it AGAIN!!!!

The best part of all was when we got prizes. It was  such a surprise that  we were not expecting at all. We loved receiving the amazing slinkies we got to keep as a memento from the night.  . All through the night we had chances to win even more prizes, s for charades, our behaviour and for packing up and looking after our school. Early in the morning, we woke up, brushed our teeth, washed our faces, packed up our belongings and got ready to see our families.

Sleepover Summary by Mahir , Kwaish and Aaron 2TS.

To get ready for our wonderful night of sleeping over at school we had to  practice making up our sleeping bags and packing it back up again. It was also important to build our confidence up before the sleep over by practicing how to be independent. Overall, we believe all the Year 2 students had the best time of the year  celebrating our friendships, showing our values of learning, being responsible, treating others with inclusivity and showing pride. It was a night we won’t forget, many  heart-warming memories were made and we will cherish them forever.

Student Leadership Update

This term our SRCs have been busy organising and running fundraisers. Our P-4 students have participated in Jump Rope for Heart. It was great to see so many teachers and students outside skipping and staying active. Our students have raised over $3000 for the Heart Foundation. Our 5/6 students joined in Relay for Life to raise awareness around cancer. Our 7-9 students helped our Year 9s who attended the Alpine School for Student Leadership organise and a run a BBQ which raised over $500.00 to assist families in need via our State Schools Relief Fund.

Recently our SRCs met to gather feedback from their classes about what students have loved about being at Tarneit College this year. It was great to see our students have enjoyed so many things about school this year including camps, clubs, incursions and excursions, a range of subjects and our community events.

A big thank you to our College Captains and House Captains who assisted during the Year 2 stay late this term. These students were fantastic role models during the event and our junior students loved having them there

Winners - Art Sculpture

Seven Year 8 students and one Year 9 student volunteered to be a part of the Wyndham City council National Recycling Week Sculpture competition. The idea was to promote recycling in a creative way through a collaborative art project. On Thursday 14 November all students attended a ceremony acknowledging all the work presented and National recycling week. We were awarded first prize for our use of recycling materials to create our sculpture. All students put in a lot of time and effort and the result looked fantastic. Well done to all!

Snags For State Schools

On Friday the 15 November our Year 9 Alpine student leaders ran a successful fundraiser to support State Schools’ Relief. State Schools’ Relief support families by helping supply new school uniforms, shoes and other essential items.

Our student leaders did a wonderful job in reaching out to local businesses to support the fundraiser. A big thank you to Woolworths Tarneit Gardens, Hotel 520 and The Butcher Club Tarneit Central for supporting and donating towards our fundraiser.

The day was very successful with our College raising a total of $562.95 which will be used to help support families.

Well done to Tarah, Majok, Malachi, Jyssie and Amarti for continuing your project by helping others!

STEM

Congratulations to Simran 9C and Yesha 9D for being selected into the Curious Minds Program for 2019-2020. The program is a collaboration of the Australian Mathematics Trust and Australian Science Innovations. Each year the AMT selects 66 high achieving female students in years 9 & 10 from across Australia and works intensively with them for 6 months. This includes 2 residential camps at Australian National University in Canberra and 6 months of one-on-one mentoring with female professionals within STEM related industries. We look forward to hearing about the first camp when the girls return.
