Sustainability Corner

Hello Ripper Families!

Did you know...

The cost of food waste to the Australian economy is estimated to be around $20 billion each year. Australian consumers throw away around 3.1 million tonnes of food—that’s close to 17,000 grounded 747 jumbo jets. Another 2.2 million tonnes is disposed of by the commercial and industrial sector.

The impact of food waste also includes the energy, fuel and water used to grow food that may not be used. When food waste is sent to landfill, it contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.

Did we hear you say, “How can I help with this?”

One way is to COMPOST!

Different councils have different systems in place…

CITY OF PORT PHILIP

CITY OF GLEN EIRA

If you live in the City of Glen Eira, you’re lucky because food scraps are no longer garbage. They belong in your green waste bin.

It gets collected every fortnight, but they are currently trailing weekly pick ups. Food waste that goes in your green waste bin includes egg shells, meat, fruit and veg (but no tea bags as they have staples and the fabric of the bags vary from brand to brand). Here is the link to the full list of what can and cannot be included  - https://www.gleneira.vic.gov.au/services/rubbish-and-recycling/food-waste-and-composting/recycle-your-food-scraps

If you have a Council green bin, residents who are interested can order a free kitchen caddy for your food scraps. You can collect your kitchen caddy from the Town Hall service desk. First call their Customer Service Centre on 9524 3333.

If you don’t have a green waste bin yet and you’re in the City of Glen Eira, give them a call to arrange one on the number above, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5.30pm (Tuesday 8am to 7.15pm).

If either of these aren’t your local council, please give your council a call and see what they have in place.

We can all do our part in reducing food waste in landfill!

Take care and ….  HAPPY COMPOSTING!
