“Our children and young people need to know that the adults in their worlds remain their ‘safe havens’,” says Dr. Judith Howard, from QUT, an expert in trauma-aware education.
Having a responsible and caring adult (or adults!) in a child’s life is vital for that child to learn to manage life in times of stress and anxiety. We can model good strategies when dealing with our own worries – Dr. Howard points out “it is very difficult to help someone who is suffering with anxiety if you are anxious yourself”.
When we replace negative attitudes with more constructive views, our language becomes more positive. Children pick up on what we say and gain confidence when the significant adults in their lives respond to stresses in calm and measured ways.
We never stop learning! Fresh challenges create new opportunities for our own growth and development.
