Positive Thinking

Learning Objective: To teach children the importance of giving themselves credit

Skill: Positive thinking

We all have inner critics that tell us things like, “You’ll never get an A, no matter how hard you study.” or “You’ll always be fat.” When a thought like this comes into your head, you can visualize a stop sign and turn your negative thought into a positive one: “I can try to get an A, but a B is okay too.” or “I can try to lose weight, and if I stick to my diet, I will.” Instead of just criticizing yourself, you can give yourself a pat on the back whenever you feel like you need one. It’s a good feeling when another person recognizes something good that you did, but you can also give yourself credit for what you’ve done. So, if you do something good and nobody notices, you can still pat yourself on the back. You don’t always need the recognition of others to feel good about yourself. Let’s remind our scholars to practice positive self-talk :)
