Acting Principal's Report

Welcome Back

On the 22nd of October we had a smoking ceremony to celebrate the raising of our new Torres Strait Islander flag. We now proudly fly the Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags at the front of the school. The smoking ceremony was conducted by Daryl Smith who is an Aboriginal Elder and a member of the Concord community. All of our Indigenous students and various students from around the school participated in the ceremony and learnt all about the traditional purposes of a smoking ceremony. We now know that the smoke has cleansing properties and the ability to ward off bad spirits from the people and the land and make a pathway for a brighter future. We look forward to this bright future at Concord School.

Class Placement

Don’t forget to hand in your classroom request forms for 2020. This year we have distributed these forms through Compass. Placing our students into classes for the following year is a significant process. We find that information from parents can greatly assist us to place students in an environment that will best suit their learning needs. If you need a printed copy of the form, please contact your team leader. Working together gives us the greatest opportunity to ensure our students can ‘be the best they can be’. We look forward to your input during this process.

Watsonia Portables

The Portables have been relocated from the Bundoora Campus and have found a new home at the Watsonia Campus. Concord School Council members toured  the property at the last meeting.

Staffing

After 10 Years at Concord School and many more as an educator Helen Edmonds has decided to retire. At the conclusion of the year Helen will wrap up her time with the Department of Education. Whilst at Concord Helen has led multiple educational initiatives and made a real difference to the learning of our students. We will forever be grateful for the impact that Helen has had on the students, teachers, staff and community here at Concord.

Karlie Gooding has been employed as the 2020 Secondary 7/8 Team Leader. Karlie comes from Millgate Primary School where she has been the Assistant Principal. Her roles have included leading teaching and learning, responsibility for the program for students with disabilities and managing wellbeing. We also welcome Elvin Ho and Brianna Wildenberg as new classroom teachers in 2020.

Sherwin demonstrated outstanding persistence during our Secondary 9/10 Surf Camp. He applied himself to each and every challenge ensuring he reached his personal best, this was especially evident during our surf lesson. Sherwin was supportive of others during the camp, working well in his activity groups and helping wherever he could.
