As we move towards the middle of the term, assessment tasks are going out to students in most Key Learning Areas.  The purpose of School Based Assessment is about much more than just generating a grade for reports.

The Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES) syllabi advocate assessment for learning, as this is a type of quality assessment that has had world-wide success in enhancing teaching and improving student learning. Assessment for learning gives students opportunities to produce work that leads to development of their knowledge, understanding and skills. Teachers decide how and when to assess student achievement, as they plan the work students will do, using a range of appropriate assessment strategies including self-assessment and peer assessment.

To help students be successful with their tasks I offer a couple of tips.  Plan the week ahead.  Any study plan should include time spent with your family and commitments outside of school (sport, dance, music, etc).  Read the task carefully and see your teacher if you have any questions.

On Tuesday 8th March parents of students in Years 7 and 10 are invited to attend the following information sessions:

> From 6.30pm parents of Year 7 students and any new families to the Secondary School are invited to meet the teachers.

Both of these events will be held in the School Hall. Your attendance is stronly encouraged.

Parents are invited to come and learn about Google Drive, how students are utilising this in the classroom as well as issues regarding cyber safety and digital citizenship. This is important information so we can keep our children safe while living in this digital age!

Google Drive is a free online cloud storage program and file sharing system.

We are extremely fortunate to have world renowned Google Apps for Education Certified Trainer and Teacher, Mike Reading, visit St Philomena’s in the coming weeks. On Monday 29th February, Mike will be presenting a session for parents and friends about Chromebooks and Google Drive, their benefits, and how students are utilising this in the classroom. He will also discuss ‘screen time’ and management strategies for technology use at home.

Senior Constable Ronald Halliday will also present a short session on issues surrounding cyber safety.

All welcome! Bring a friend.

This has relevance to all parents.
