Connect with Careers @ MGC

The Careers area at MGC is keen to connect with Alumni that would like to take up the opportunity to share their ‘Career story’ with current students.  Students are really keen to know what is possible once they leave high school and to hear about the different jobs/industries that they could end up in one day.

Most recently, Ruby Vadiveloo (Class of 2012) came in to speak to current students about her experience of not only auditioning for but being accepted into The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.  The students found this very insightful and can now see that with a lot of hard work, this is a real possibility!

There is also opportunity to mentor our Year 10 students through our Work Experience program that occurs at the end of each year. Having insight into different occupations and industries can really assist students when making career decisions.

If you would like to make direct contact with Erin Edgley (Careers Co-ordinator) about being involved in any of the above, please email careers@mgc.vic.edu.au or phone 9425 8943.

Alumni Reconnecting with MGC

On Monday September 7, the Middle School Executive hosted an assembly for all Yr 7, 8 & 9 girls with the focus on Female Empowerment and Feminism. When considering different ways we could approach this broad topic, the team came up with the idea of inviting ex-students Tess Falconer and Georgia Schmidt to speak about their journey of becoming successful women in the modern world. Both Tess and Georgia are living examples and role models of MGC’s Lead and Achieve philosophy. Their stories inspired the girls and reminded them that they can still be successful even when working in and encountering challenges in male dominated careers.

After the assembly, leaders from the Middle School Executive took the initiative to write and then teach classes to their peers using a lesson plan crafted from ideas around the key concepts of feminism and empowerment. The classes included discussions about the different meanings of feminism and the importance of it in their own lives, the media and its effects (especially when stereotyping women) as well as researching powerful and positive female role models.  The students also viewed videos of influential women including Emma Watson’s now famous He For She UN speech.

During a two week period in September the Middle School Executive taught over 600 girls and now that the program has drawn to a close we hope that everyone has their own individual take on what feminism means to them and what is possible in their own lives.

Most of all, we hope that everyone now believes they have the power to set and reach their goals. We’d like to thank Tess and Georgia for supporting our special project and for helping to make it such a success.
