Continuums and Rubrics

At Staughton, we spend considerable time and effort to plan for student learning growth. A key part of this is to know what students are ready to learn next. Our English department has been working on developing learning progressions in order to do this. I am very proud of the fact that they have done this to such a high level that they have been accepted to speak at this year’s Australian Association for Teacher of English Conference. Kelly Boorman and Lauren Perkins will present the following session to English teachers.

Mission possible: Leading a whole school approach to continuums and rubrics

What if students could mark as accurately as their teachers? What if you could break down every skill a student needed from Years 7-12? For five years, Staughton College’s English team has taken a progressive approach to rubrics and developmental continuums. It’s the balancing act of teaching the tasks plus engaging students in reading and writing! If you want rubrics that work, this is the session for you.

Mobile Phone Policy

As you may be aware, the Victorian government has announced a new mobile phone policy that will require students to switch their phones off and securely store them away during the school day. The policy is designed to support teaching and learning in an environment that is free from unnecessary distractions, disruptions and student inattention caused by the urge to check their phones. At recess and lunch times, students will be better-placed to communicate with each other face to face and/or be involved in activities rather than being focused on a device or on social media.

The new mobile phone policy comes into effect from Term 1, 2020. It requires that students who choose to bring mobiles phones to school must have them switched off and securely put away during school hours. All students will be provided, at no cost, with a locker at the start of the school year. More details on the implementation of this policy will be provided before the commencement of the 2020 school year.
