VCAL/FLO

VMR

After months of ground work the VMR Station build project at Harcourt is rising high out of the ground. Each Friday a dozen VCAL students work with registered builders Tim and Redda and a variety of tradespeople. Skills covered each week so far include: trenching, concreting, brickwork, laying a subfloor and framing.

The project featured on WIN News when students gave up their holidays to continue to assist with the build. It is hopeful the build will be completed to lock-up by December.

Homelessness Project

A group of girls have been working with Melissa Laragy exploring the issue of homelessness. Research has included interviewing a range of local providers including CHIRP, Salvation Army, CADARG, and Church of Christ each giving their own perspectives on local solutions to support homelessness.

Steph and Jesse ran a BBQ  at Blakeley Rd Campus and raised $125 for CHIRP. Another activity was a sleepover at Etty St run by Melissa and Shiralee that involved lots of fun, a camp fire, and discussions and documentaries about homelessness.

This project will continue in term 4 with an excursion to Melbourne with a 4 hour Salvation Army workshop.

ROTARY BREAKFAST- Payback time.

Each Thursday morning our wonderful friends at Rotary come to Etty St and cook delicious egg and bacon toasted sandwiches. It was decided VCAL and FLO students would return the favour. Rotary organized one of their meetings at Etty St and listened to a presentation about the VMR Project and everyone was well fed and Rotary are keen to do it all again!

TRADIE BREAKFAST

From Rotary to the local trades. In conjunction with Headstart and Maine Timber and Hardware, VCAL students ran a ‘tradie brekky’ at the local hardware store in Campbells Creek. The event proved a terrific opportunity to for local trades to network with students, Headstart Program and the GLLEN Structured Workplace Learning Program. The improved networking opportunities will hopefully translate into opportunities for VCAL students with work placements in the future.

MORE BBQ

Keeping up with the BBQ theme, Rob has been working with Dylan, Dillon, Mitchell and India to refurbish a derelict BBQ area at Etty St. Demolition of brick work, angle grinding, replacing seating and learning skills in rendering has seen on unused area slowly come back to life.
