A Look at Learning

Home Talk - What is it?

During our Literacy Block each week students are preparing to create a piece of writing called a Big Write.  Our writing sessions each day allow students to learn and practice new skills to construct a piece of writing. It is during these sessions that students will need to conduct a session called  “Home Talk”. This is where parents and carers can get involved and help students articulate their ideas, concerns and communicate their writing goals orally and be fully prepared for their writing session the next day.  Home Talk takes around 5-10  minutes and involves a conversation with students on their plans for the next days piece of writing. This can be done over the dinner table, in the car home after sport or as students are preparing for bed.

Students will often bring home their Big Write topic and stimulus for discussion and initiate the Home Talk. I have added below some questions that will help make the Home Talk session successful and valuable!

What is the topic for your Big Write?

What are your ideas or plan for your writing?

How are you feeling about your writing tomorrow?

Where can you go for help if your unsure?

What is your writing goal you are working towards at the moment?
