Last Friday, the staff at Holy Name were lucky enough to work with Dr Bern Long and Dr Ange Rogers developing our knowledge and skills in the area of Addition and Subtraction. The day provided us with a number of strategies, activities and games that allow us to help the students develop their skills in this area.
We have a whole school approach to the teaching of addition and subtraction strategies at Holy Name which are visible in all classes.
All students have a Matific Account this year. Matific is an online interactive mathematics program that is games-based to allow a fun, engaging way for students to practise their mathematical skills.
Each student will be sent a login and password so that they can access this from home as well as school. Please keep an eye out for student logins in your child's diary in the next week.
A number of the strategies used in mathematics require an understanding of how numbers can be broken up into different parts. For example, if we look at the number 5, we know that it could be made up of 5 & 0, 4 & 1, 3 & 2, 2 & 3, 1 & 4, or 0 & 5. This knowledge helps us throughout different areas of mathematics including addition and subtraction.
This knowledge is what we refer to as part, part, whole.
