Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

Last weekend saw the conclusion of our Term 1 sports for 2023. It was a wonderful season for Marist with two premierships, a second and a third place across the four sports played in the AIC competition. Our 1st XI cricketers secured an outright premiership with a comprehensive victory against St Edmunds. The 1st XVIII ran the gauntlet of two matches in three days, winning both well, to secure a shared premiership, and our first in the short history of AFL in the AIC competition. The 1st VI also had a strong victory to confirm their podium finish with third place overall, and we recently celebrated the success of our swim team in securing second place at the recent AIC championships.

You can read more about the highs and lows of our individual programs along with thank yous and special mentions. I just have a few to add to those.

Year 12s - thank you for your years of service to the College and your sport of choice. Hopefully, you have enjoyed the experience of playing for your school, developed some skills, including life skills, had some wins and some loses and take away great memories with you. Thank you also to the parents for your involvement in the Marist sport community, and the part you have played in making this an inclusive, supportive and friendly environment. Good luck in the future gentlemen.

Mr Adam Knight and Mr Scott Minogue hang up their coordinators hats at the conclusion of this season of volleyball. To say they will be missed is an understatement. I have known Mr Knight professionally for over 15 years. Not only is he passionate and knowledgeable about volleyball, dedicating his time, his energy and his commitment to his program and the boys, he is also a wonderful human being who is always there for the anyone who needs help. I have only known Mr Minogue for a couple of years but it was apparent straight away how much he cares for the boys, makes sure he provides a safe, secure environment and is totally committed to making sure playing volleyball is a positive experience for everyone. I am hoping they will continue coaching next year as they are such terrific role models for us all.

Mr Brett Gillett is quite simply Mr AFL. Nothing gave me more satisfaction last week amongst the premiership celebrations in AFL and cricket than seeing a beaming smile on the face of Mr Gillett on Friday afternoon. The achievements of the 2023 team are a testament to the hours and hours of dedication and commitment he has shown since long before AFL was even an AIC sport.

Mr Mitch Reid is also stepping aside as cricket coordinator and he goes out on a high with our first outright cricket premiership since 2015. Anyone who knows Mr Reid knows he cares about people, his staff and the boys, is very experienced in cricket and brings a calming influence and experience to the coaches.

Thank you to Mrs Tara Franklin and Mr Adam Earnshaw who took on the reigns of the AFL program at short notice and were a great support for the coaches on game day. Thank you to our firsts coaches Mr Michael Abbott (cricket), Ms Scarlett Rudder (volleyball) and Mr Matt Beattie (AFL) and all their support staff for your leadership of our flagship teams, mentoring the boys and providing great examples for the boys as people. I also thank all the staff, Old Boys, parents and external coaches for your work with our boys this term in each of our sports.

Finally, well done to all the boys who pulled on the blue and gold uniform this term. We set high expectations of you in uniform, behaviour, attitude, commitment, and respect for others. We do this because we are a school and this is a vehicle to help you grow into men of good character and discipline. Whether you won, lost or drew each week you by and large did it with tremendous spirit and respect, for which you should be proud.

This weekend sees our internal trials for rugby and football. Further details are in the relevant section below and also on the College App. Boys should endeavour to be at as many trials over the coming weeks as possible to give yourself the best chance to play at the highest level you can. Team lists are never fixed, you can always get promoted if you keep working hard, and of course the opposite is also true, no-one is guaranteed a position.

AFL - Mr Adam Earnshaw and Mrs Tara Franklin (AFL Co-ordinators)

1st XVIII by Michael Travers - 1st XVII Manager

On Wednesday 15 March, MCA 1st XVIII took on St Peters College at the home of AFL Queensland – Yeronga. St Peters Lutheran College have had a tough season but the message from Coach Matt "Respect the Opposition" was taken on board by our boys and was well called for as Peters slotted an early goal and did themselves proud by showing they were here to play footy.

It didn't take long for MCA to settle into their now familiar rhythm led most notably by Ned out of the centre. The team got behind the two Yr10 boys, Ollie and Xavier who were donning the 1st jersey for the first time. Both boys went home with goals to their name in their first game with the first. With such depth and some strong players coming through the junior program AFL looks set to remain strong at MCA over the coming years.

The boys remained humble, disciplined, and respectful as they systematically moved the ball forward through a surprisingly strong opposition. MCA fed the ball again and again to Jackson Williams who remained composed while he slotted 9 goal 2 only robbed of a 10 bagger when lighting stopped play midway through the final quarter.

In another typical display of Marist sportsmanship Thomas Williams who has spent the whole season in the backs with no scoring opportunities found his way into the forward line. He took a strong contested mark 10 meters out which would have given him a certain goal but in fine style he quickly offloaded the ball to the young first gamer who did the business and put it through for 6 points. MCA came away with a convincing 124 to 12 win and only a few minor injuries that should see them in a good position to back it up this Friday evening for their final game and barring complete disaster finish on top of the table.

Backing up after a mid-week game against St Peters, the 1st XVIII again boarded the bus on Friday afternoon and headed to Yeronga – this time to take on Eddies. MCA jointly share the top of the premiership table with Laurie’s and Villa. Our Boys needed to come away with a victory to ensure they will be Premiers. Whether they will share the podium as joint premiers or stand victorious alone won’t be known until the end of the week when all Round Seven games are complete.

It was a hot afternoon although the intensity had gone out of the sun and a breeze provided some relief. The boys kept well hydrated during warmup and by the time they ran on through a large loud and fired-up turnout of The Hive they looked ready to play some Footy.

A credit to Eddies who fielded a full squad and did their best to contest every ball but it was our Boys who delivered play after consistent play that saw the ball moved expertly up the field. Impressive Goal to point ratio resulted in a 6-goal haul in the first quarter. This was replicated in the second with the scoring shared amongst players.

After half time it was much the same but with some changes off the bench and Eddies managed a few scoring shots, doing themselves proud keeping their heads up against a stronger opposition.

The final quarter saw All Year 12 boys on for the full quarter, some playing out of position to allow players from the back line to play up. This would be their last quarter of School Boy AFL and, as history will tell, come what may on Friday they will forever be part of the first 1st XVIII MCA team to bring home a premiership flag.

With five Year 10s getting runs during the season and some strong talent in the Year 11 group, the future of AFL at MCA is looking bright for the coming years.

The Boys celebrated by dousing Coach Matt with an ice bucket of water but there was nothing that could have wiped the smile from his face.

Congratulations to all Players and Coaches on a fantastic season and a well-deserved victory!

Juniors

With 7A and 9/10A’s having byes this weekend it made for a short, sharp but very hot Round 7. 8A’s displayed great Marist Sportsmanship assisting St Edmund’s College to field a team and playing a strong game of football. Although technically a forfeit, the score was 75-5. They were humble and grateful for their first win of the season and did their coach, parent/guardians and coordinators proud. 8Bs had a very challenging game against a strong Ambrose Treacy squad. The boys kept their heads up and managed to get a point on the board. They went down 1-86. 7A’s played well dominating all game and won against St Edmunds 32-13. 9/10Bs also gave it their all, winning against Villanova College 62-13. Congratulations to Tank Tumman who kicked 5 goals during the 9/10B game. Thank you to Jeff DeHeus who filled in for Corey Robinson as assistant coach/runner.

The AFL umpiring course continues this week with ten juniors developing their umpiring skills and further understanding of the game. We look forward to seeing them officiate our games in years to come!

It has been wonderful to see the AFL program at the college grow this year. Thank you to Brett Gillett, sports department, coaches and parents for their support.

Cricket - Mr Mitch Reid (Cricket Coordinator)

Saturday saw the conclusion of the AIC cricket season, with the College taking on St Edmund’s College and Ambrose Treacy College in Round 7.

Our 1st XI who were playing for the AIC premiership had another strong win over SEC to claim the outright premiership. This is the first time since 2018 (and 2015 outright) the 1st XI has won the premiership. Congratulations to all players and coaches for this achievement and their fantastic season, finishing 6-1. Not only have the players displayed great results on the field, but they have also been great role models for our younger cricket students throughout the season.

Congratulations to all our other teams. There have been strong team and individual results across all year levels and every player should be proud of their contributions to their teams and the College throughout the season.

Thank all students and parents for their involvement and commitment to the Marist College cricket program. It was great to return to a full season of AIC cricket after two years of covid and floods disruptions. I hope that all students who played cricket this Term found enjoyment and pride representing the College and building friendships outside the classroom. With 33 teams across Year 5-12 the program requires a lot of hard work from many people. To our coaches and year level coordinators, thank your efforts across Term 4 and 1 with selected teams, developing training plans and doing everything required on a Saturday (ground setup, coaching, umpiring and scoring). A special mention to Marist College sport staff Mr Derek Lennon, Mr John Lambourne and Mr Corey Lucas for their support of the program and to Mr Callum Clark and ground staff for their tireless work to provide the students with the best playing facilities across all AIC schools.

I wish all cricket students the best of luck in their winter sports and hope to see them return to the cricket program for another big season in 2024.

1st XI Cricket by Ben Ferguson

On Saturday, we travelled out to Tivoli to play St Edmund's with a premiership on the line. Winning this game guaranteed at least a shared premiership, giving us everything to play for. Marist lost the toss and were sent out to bowl on what looked to be a flat wicket and a slow outfield in 34-degree heat!

With the St Edmund's openers sticking around for a while, they looked to have stepped up to the occasion. However, not long after, Joe Lanner claimed the first wicket of the game, and all of a sudden, wickets were not so hard to come by. Spin seemed effective, with Louis Morris and Sam Lewis taking three wickets between them, but the pick of the bowlers went to Year 10 quick Joe Lanner. Without missing his length all day, he picked up the key wicket of St Edmund's captain Ben Naish early, along with four others for the day. Notable mention to Flynn Cleary, who bowled stump to stump to take two key wickets also.

With St Edmund's all out for just 59, Tom Wex and Frank Piper took to the crease. Unfortunately, we lost Tom Wex early for eight runs, and Will Nickelson joined Frank out in the middle. Will and Frank showed their class, scoring the runs in just 15 overs and finished Marist's innings at 1/60.

During the day, news filtered through that St Pats stumbled in their match against Iona, which allowed Marist to secure the outright premiership for the season!

Marist secured its first cricket Premiership since 2018 and the last outright premiership since 2015 (many of the playing group did not start Marist until 2016). Standout performers in that 2018 were Nick McPhee, Jack O'Neill, and Hayden Whyte.

As has been tradition all year, the team and parents convened for a post-match function and reflected on the season that was in a great family night. Karla Morris, our chief media officer, prepared a great video of the season in review.

Many thanks to Mr Abbott, Tom Gibson, and Mr Reid for their hard work and dedication to the cricket program this season. Also, a special mention to Mr Newman, who has hardly missed a game.

Trial Notes

  • Boys will need to report in at the first trial they attend to the Year Coordinator and ensure their name is marked off for every trial they attend afterwards.
  • Boys should look to attend as many trials as they can for selection but need to balance with their academic workload and also honour your Term 1 sport commitments. Consider your academic exam schedule and make informed decisions about whether you need to attend a trial or miss a trial to prepare for exams. Clear communication with the A coach or Year Coordinator is vital here.
  • If you are unable to attend the scheduled trials you need to email the Year Level Coordinator in advance of the trial to notify. Provide your name and student number and the reason you are missing the trial. Contact details will be on the College App in the coming days.

  • You can find the selection criteria on the College App.
  • Illness and injury will impact on the selection process. Trials will continue until the end of Week 1, some year levels may take longer than others. This is to allow all boys to be graded fairly.

Track and Field – Mr Richard Graham - (Director of Track and Field)

A massive congratulations to the College’s 14 Queensland State representatives who have made the Queensland team to compete at the Junior Nationals Athletics Championships in April (Date: Thursday 13 - Sunday 16t April 2023).

On the weekend Charlie Campion made it as our 14th representative competing in the 90m Hurdles. Well done Charlie! The list of other students who had already gained selection includes Joel Drew, Lee Martin, Zac Milligan, Asher Parkin, Jonah Miles, Isaiah Burgess, Connor Campbell, Isaac Ting, George Daly, James Prole, Sam Brassington, Xavier Simms, Shea Caminiti.

This is a great effort for Marist to have so many representing Queensland at a National Championships. Well done to Head Coach, Mr Rob Martin for his meticulous planning and training, and to all the boys for their commitment. Many of this group will no doubt form the core of 2023's AIC team for Marist. In speaking with Mr Martin, he cannot think of a year in recent history where the College has had 14 Queensland representatives.

We wish the students all the best in their preparation as they seek further personal bests and push for finals amongst the elite athletes in the nation.

Rugby Union - Mr Richard Graham (Director of Rugby)

Marist Referee Ready Program

Congratulations to the nine Marist students who recently completed their rugby union referee’s accreditation.

  • Jacob Benson – Year 11
  • Pedro Hoffmann – Year 11
  • Elliot Aldridge – Year 10
  • Micah Netzler – Year 10
  • Hamish Locke – Year 10
  • Angus Shay – Year 9
  • Patrick Travers – Year 9
  • Matthew Travers – Year 8
  • Owen Aldridge – Year 8

I would like to express my gratitude to the students for their willingness to be involved with the Marist Rugby Refereeing Program and their commitment to ensuring safe and fair rugby is played each Saturday.

The boys join another six students who are already accredited referees and provide the College with a genuine point of difference.

The Marist College Ashgrove Rugby Referee Program was offered to anyone in Year 8 and above who was interested in becoming a referee. For the first time the program was extended to anyone in the Marist community who would like to become a referee including fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters of Marist students.

A big thank you must go to Old Boy and former Test referee, Mr Rohan Hoffmann. Mr Hoffmann delivered the course over a number of weeks and provided valuable insight into the benefits and challenges of having the best seat in the house.

The Marist rugby community wish our new referees all the best and we look forward to supporting you from the sidelines each Saturday.

Marist Coaches

Marist Rugby is again fortunate to have an incredible list of coaches. This week we look at the Year 7-10 coaches who will deliver an aligned and integrated approach across the College.

The 10A’s will be coached by Mr Peter McIntosh and Mr Anthony Mathison. Mr McIntosh is a former 1st XV winning coach, whilst Mr Mathison has won a Brisbane 1st Grade premiership as Head Coach and coached the 1st XV.

Our appreciation also to our other outstanding coaches: Ms Mel Orcher, Mr Dean Collins, Mr Kabel Dawes, Mr Jack McIntosh and Mr Jack Eldridge for their support, care and guidance of the Year 10 students.

Our thanks to Mr McIntosh who will be the year-level coordinator.

The 9A’s will be coached by Mr Tony Byrne and Mr David Meehan. Both men have had long and successful coaching careers at the College winning at every level from the 1st XV and down. Their knowledge of the game of rugby at the College is unmatched.

Our appreciation also to our other outstanding coaches: Mr Simon O’Hare, Mr Joseph Burns, Mr Mal Grealy, Mr Will Andreas, Mr Max Jorquera and Mr Finn Eldridge.

Our thanks to Mrs Liz Walsh who will be the year-level coordinator.

The 8A’s will be coached by Mr Charlie Taylor, Mr Paddy Conn and Mr Tim Atkinson. Mr Taylor and Mr Conn enjoyed a successful two-year stint as the 9B’s coaches and have been involved in the Marist cricket and rugby league programs. Mr Atkinson is a former Australian 7’s representative and played Super Rugby for the Brumbies.

Our appreciation also to our other outstanding coaches: Mr Pierce Hardy, Mr Will Burkett, Mr Cameron Pfeffer, Mr Harry Gates, Mr Tom Cocks and Mr James Walton.

Our thanks to Mrs Sharon Davidson who will be the year-level coordinator.

The 7A’s will be coached by Mr Michael Abbott and Mr Doug Perrers. Mr Abbott is the current premiership-winning coach of the 1st XI Marist cricket team, and a former Director of Rugby and 1st XV coach at Ipswich Grammar. Mr Perrers was coaching the 10A’s last season and is a coach with the premiership-winning Colt’s 2 side at the University of Queensland.

Our appreciation also to our other outstanding coaches: Mr Angus Sutherland, Mr Tom Dangerfield, Mr Damien Nelson and Mr Francis Sevil.

Our thanks to Mr Damien Nelson who will be the year-level coordinator.

Rugby Ready Program

The regularly scheduled Rugby Ready Program has now finished. Thanks to everyone for their support of the Rugby Ready Program – parents, students and coaches. It has been a massive program putting approximately 750 students through the 4-week staged progression, however, I couldn’t speak more highly of the student’s attitude and approach.

To ensure all the students are prepared for the rugby union season, the 4-week program delivered a safe progression from skill development to contact, with a strong focus on the Scrum “MayDay” call.

A reminder to everyone that the Rugby Ready Program is compulsory for all students wishing to play rugby in 2023. I understand due to injuries or absence, some students are still to complete the mandatory four sessions. I will work with these students to complete the four sessions and ensure every student that wants to play rugby union will be able to do so.

Training and Trials

This week the students will start training in year groups in preparation for the internal trials on Saturday 25 March. The 1st XV, 10As, 8As and 7As will play the Sunshine Coast Grammar School, whilst the rest of the school will play internal trials.

The Rugby Ready Program has provided an insight into the quality and depth of player in each year level and now the coaches will begin working through the selection process.

This year the College will be maximising the participation of every student selecting teams of only 15. The only exception to this will be when teams play away from the College in isolation or the schedule forces a long wait between games eg. 9C to 9B. In this instance, the squad numbers will be increased to 17.

NOTE – As per AIC By-Laws, Year 5 teams will play with 12 players.

Other trial opportunities include the Marist Rugby Easter Camp and a full school trial in Term 2 against St Laurence’s College. Every student will have the chance through training and games to put their best foot forward for selection.

Expectations and Standards

We are continuing to deliver higher expectations and standards, and the boys are embracing The Marist Way.

On time, in the right gear, ready to train!

PUNCTUALITY – A reminder that morning training sessions START at 6:45am and afternoon sessions at 3:30pm. Students need to be dressed and ready to begin their sessions at these times.

Unless instructed differently by their coach, players are to arrive on game day dressed in their playing gear 45 minutes prior to kick-off.

DRESS – It is wonderful to see the bumblebee jersey and/or Marist MCA shirt, Marist rugby shorts and Marist socks being worn to all training sessions.

Grey school socks are NOT part of the rugby union uniform and are not to be worn.

A reminder to ALL students that the dress code for training sessions is Marist clothing.

JERSEYS TUCKED IN, SOCKS PULLED UP. The rugby union program has driven the highest of standards through the Rugby Ready Program. The students are aware of the need to tuck their jerseys in and pull their socks up before entering the field of play. The coaches are aligned and will continue to be insistent throughout the season. We would ask for the support of parents and guardians to help manage this.

BEHAVIOUR – A reminder to students that being 100% Marist, 100% of the time extends from off the field to on the field. We want to compete hard and play physical attacking rugby, and do it in the spirit of good sportsmanship.

SUPPORT – A huge focus this year is the ability to connect the Marist rugby community through various initiatives. There will be a lot happening around the College on game days including announcements, music, activations and post-game gatherings.

An easy and obvious gesture of support is when students finish their game, they stay to sit on the bench of the next game and support their year-level mates.

This theme of “connection” has been delivered consistently through the Rugby Ready Program with the Blue Squad (1st XV squad) attending and supporting 3 of the 4 Year 5 / 6 sessions. Well done to those students!

Marist Rugby Easter Camp

For those people who are following the Marist Ashgrove_Rugby Instagram page, you will have seen a recent post of the Easter Rugby Camp including some trials against Nudgee College. In what we believe will already be a unique and innovative rugby experience, it is fantastic to have Nudgee College’s 1st XV, 2nd XV and 12As join us at the camp.

Tickets for the camp have been selling fast. As of yesterday, the College had sold over 220 tickets of an expected 400 tickets that will go on sale. For those wanting to attend the camp, please see the Marist app – Rugby Union – All Ages Rugby Camp for the confirmation link.

1st XV and 2nd XV

Training for the 1st XV and 2nd XV has been underway for some time now. After a 3-week block at the start of Term 1 open to all participants, the squad has slowly been refined through further training sessions, a camp at the Sunshine Coast Recreation Centre and an internal trial involving 44 players.

Last Sunday the 1st XV and 2nd XV travelled to Toowoomba for trial matches against Downlands College. In warm conditions, the 1st XV won a physical encounter 24-17, whilst the 2nd XV drew in the earlier game 10-10. It was a good experience for the 36 boys who left Marist at 6:45am to play morning rugby in very warm weather.

Thanks to all the parents who drove up the range to support the boys. It was wonderful to see so many friendly faces.

A huge thanks to Downlands College for hosting our teams, providing us with two very competitive fixtures and for feeding the students for the journey home. It is very much appreciated.

Tennis - Mr Andrew Ward (Director of Tennis)

As we begin the last week of squads this week, I thought I would take the opportunity to thank all students who have been a part of our squad and group lessons. It is pleasing to see so many improve their tennis skills and match play for those who played in our fixtures program. We are looking good for AIC and believe we have seen a huge increase in numbers wanting to be apart of the program here. A huge focus for us has been to unify the boys to feel part of a team and belong. We are trying to create a place of fun and learning for all boys to look forward to their lessons.

One thing that is not pleasing to me though is a small number of boys who continually muck around during lessons instead of listening and learning from their coaches. The majority of students are really switched on and keen to learn but when we have some not wanting to do this it can have a negative effect on others in the group.

This will not be tolerated here at Marist and unless this behaviour is rectified, we will no longer be able to coach these boys here unfortunately. I will not name names, but I am sure that the boys in question know who they are, and I just want them to know, I know who you are, and it must stop. We have talked about this as a group I thought we were past this but apparently not.

AIC Trials 1st X squad

On a brighter note, we are happy to announce we are starting with our first trial for AIC next week the 27-28 March 3:30pm-5:30pm for our 1st X Squad. We will also have 23-24 April 3:30pm-5:30pm for the last two trials before we pick our team.

We will also have 3 days in the holidays where students from this squad can come and practice with coaches. This will be held 11-13 April from 3:00pm-5:00pm.

This squad is free and will have coaching twice a week during Term 2, Tuesday and Thursday each week. This will start on Thursday 27 April 3:30pm-5:00pm. A prerequisite for this squad is compulsory attendance. If you can’t make these sessions, then you will not be picked.

Holiday Clinic

We will be holding a holiday clinic on 11-13 April in the second week of the holidays.

Cost is $150.00 for 3 days and runs from 8:00am-11:30pm. Students are to be picked up from the pool each day where we will finish off with a swim.
