Secondary Community News

Lower Secondary (Years 7-8)

This week was Harmony Week. We completed multiple activities which explored and celebrated everyone’s culture within our classrooms. It was fun to learn more about each other.

Recently in 7/8s we have been learning about Australia. We are reading a story called "Are We There Yet?" The book is about a family travelling around Australia. We made a map of Australia out of cardboard and paint so that we could follow where the family was going. In STEM we have been creating a marble run out of cardboard, glue, icy pole sticks, plastic cups and paper. It was really fun!  During maths we have been practicing place value, making numbers using MAB and expanding the number.  Some of us have also been enjoying the Canine Comprehension Program. We are now looking forward to travel training to Flagstaff Gardens and then the Easter Holidays.  Thanks, the 7/8 team.

Upper Secondary (Years 9-10)

This week, the 9/10s participated in a Food Safe Handling course hosted onsite by William Angliss. Here the students learned about the different hazards in the kitchen, proper food storage and food safety.

The day started off with learning about dangers in food and how to store food safely. For example, meat needs to be refrigerated and cereal can be kept in a cupboard. We learned the fridge needs to be kept at 1-4 and the freezer around -18.The day then progressed to learning about handwashing, bacteria, cross-contamination, and proper food handling procedures. At the end of the course the students were given an opportunity to test their skills in the café. Students went on to make milkshakes and practiced their cutting skills.

The students who attended this course not only have new skills to work in the kitchen and café, but they also earned a certificate!
